Weaning triplets

Going to start weaning my triplets in 2 weeks time when they are 26 weeks, as per guidelines, but unsure how to proceed. They were 6 weeks premature, so while good head control, they are not yet sitting up by themselves. They are constantly chewing their hands, and are starting to coordinate bringing something from their hand to their mouths.
I BLW DS1, and ideally want to go this route with these guys, but not sure if this is feasible. Anyone out there who has BLW their premature babies?

Hey Bailey I just did a post on this - or more specifically why I cou;dn't BLW my premmie twins - in the Under/Around 1 Twins thread if you're still reading there!

There was no way I could have BLWed mine. They were only ten week sadjusted age when we started them on food, so it was a spoon and purée for us.

Have you considered just waiting an extra month and seeing if they are ready then?

Delaying solids can have some benefits for full term babies, but not sure if this applies to babies born early?

Are they having multivit/mineral drops right now? Because I know that's often prescribed with preemies.

baileyslover · 25/01/2013 13:58

Yep they are on multivitamins, but think it is the iron levels which drop which is why 6 months actual is recommended.

I think iron can be really confusing and the "information" the formula companies promote doesn't always give the full picture. There is some evidence that if you wean at 7 months, your babies will have higher iron levels at 12 months than there peers who were weaned earlier, have a look here. This info is from a bfing site and aimed at full term babies though so you might want to discuss iron and weaning with your Paed or HCP.

Also the iron stores don't magically disappear at 6 months. They may start to deplete once your baby reaches 6 months. Again though, this is full term babies so discussing it further might help you get a clearer picture Smile.
