Alternative to baby rice

Hello
Im a couple of months of weaning DS2, but was reading about how bad baby rice is, so will avoid it. On the WHO website it talks about oats.

Que stupid question of the day - Do they mean oats like we have in porridge? I am not sure I have seen baby oats?!

Please be gentle, I'm not really stupid!

Readybrek would work fine if you want to give something gloopy, but if your ds has been weaning a while, theres no reason not to give him normal porridge

OwlCatMouse · 11/01/2013 10:53

Ready brek is fine :)
(and before anybody jumps on it, it now has no added salt)

BluddyNora · 11/01/2013 11:02

Just start with veg?

FamiliesShareGerms · 11/01/2013 11:06

The only use for baby rice, IMHO, is to thicken up food so it sticks together a bit better so it stays on the spoon

Normal porridge fine after a couple of months weaning, surely? (Try the normal oats rather than the jumbo ones)

Avoid gloop and go down the baby lead weaning route? Cooked broccoli tree or half a banana in hand and see what happens!

I'm assuming you are waiting till 6 months? Im which case if you want to use a cereal based gloop then porridge is fine. Nor pre 6 months as they should be really gluten free at least till then .

ready brek is what I started my DD on started off really runny then slowly got thicker. I used to puree fruit and veg and add them to the ready break or just on there own.

if you get ice cube trays and put the puree in them, freeze it them transfer to freezer bags and date them (can be kept for a month). makes life much easier.

OwlCatMouse · 11/01/2013 12:29

Does ready brek have gluten then? Confused

I though it was just oats.

I am planning on waiting for 6 months, DS1 was 6.5, he was never really interested in food, still isn't really! DS2 seems a much hungrier baby, I think he is going to love his food!
Will do a mix of purées and finger foods like last time, but just skip out the cereal part maybe.

Carrots mushed up with his normal milk. Tastes nicer than you think too!

I'm going to start weaning in 5 weeks, I have Annabel Karmel's 100 best baby purees and SUPERFOODS for babies and children. I'm finding them really helpful. Think I'll start with sweet potato! Yum!
