Allergic to baby porridge?

Hi! My almost 6 month old has had three days of cow and gate baby porridge.

After eating he has developed hot red blotches on his face and hands. They go after about half an hour.

The gp thought that it might be a milk allergy - he is ebf - but he has had 4 bottles of formula in his life and didn't have any reaction to that.

I'm really worried about giving him any other food. Has anyone else

Sorry, jumped up to rescue screaming baby from play gym and accidentally pressed send!

Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

How recently has he had the formula though? Milk allergy is most likely. Oats is possible, but unusual.

Ps there's lots of ood advice on the Allergy board here as well, try posting there too?

The formula was in the first week of life. We've tried in the last few weeks as well and although he's only taken the odd bit and dribbled most of it out it has never had any reaction on his face.

My DS had the same reaction after baby porridge - blotchy face and neck, followed by profuse vomiting. I was worried it was an allergy but have since given him cheese, yoghurt, foods containing cow's milk etc - with no side effects. Quite odd!

Am so pleased Balloon! I hope that happens for us too!!

Why don't you try Ready Brek (it's cheaper too) to see if it's the oats?

Theas18 · 11/01/2013 12:26

Gosh look at the ingredient list. There will be loads of " junk" in there and also cows milk components. Packet foods are a terrible mush of additives really.

Second the ready brek suggestion but will you make it with breast milk? THat would be the best option.

Or just give him something else for breakfast etc fruit / veg, he's a baby and wont care if he has broccoli for breakfast Smile

My dd had the same reaction and is allergic to CMP. Same thing happened when I gave her cheese, fromage frais and dabbed cows milk in her arm. She broken out in hives!! However she is ok with cm when its baked, cooked, boiled as the CMP changes!! It's all trial and error!

We hs the exact same when we started weaning. It was either diary or wheat s it happened when we have her toast and butter, or porridge and cows milk. Her face would go all blotchy for bout half an hour then clear up. We kept trying, trying to isolate what it was and never cruelly got to the bottom of it as after a few days it stopped happening. So for us I think it might just have been adjusting to food from being ebf. Not sure if that's a scientific answer or not! I still keep an eye out, but 3 weeks later we don't have my rash and she's had bread and diary products since with no reaction.

Sleepyfergus · 13/01/2013 09:43

Feck, loads of typos in that as bf at the mo. cruelly = really

melonribena · 13/01/2013 19:46

Thanks! That has made me feel a million times better. I'm going to try a dab test but am hoping it just goes away!
