Confused about weaning - first 12 months, not much apart from milk???

Hi,
I am confused about weaning - are there 2 different ways, either you keep up bf/ ff till 12 months with only a few spoon fulls or by the age of 1 they are on 2 bf/ ff and otherwise on solids and joining family meals?

My problem is that DS is getting heavier and heavier on solids - and I only dropped one feed and introduced 1 additional meal (I am on 4 bf and 2 meals) and I am not sure if I should drop one feed again? He's eating and eating and eating and won't stop, always crying for more and he eats a lot more than the other babies at his age. Hence his weight gain.

What is right?

Thanks, Thali

what age is he?

Until he's one the advice is to bf an hour before offering solids, do you think that might help?

hoop - he's 8 months
Julie - ah, I didn't know, yes that helps!

He idea of doing it hat way is that he gets enough milk. Once he is one you can offer a bf after solids.

If you are concerned about his weight do you know what centile he is on and has this changed?

He used to be on the 9th, but had terrible reflux. After 4 months - and outgrowing the reflux - he was a while on the 25th and now, after starting solids, crossed onto the 75th. The HV said he's getting to heavy and I should cut down the solids.

The problem is that he LOVES food, we can't eat around him as there is no stopping him, he doesn't turn his head or cries because he has enough ... it's always more, more, more and - as he's gaining so quickly - now restrict his food intake.

I bfed him now only one hour before a feed but it makes zero difference to the amount of food he eats (or wants). He has for lunch 250gr mash (veggis, potatos, meat) and one fruit pot (or real fruit) and 200ml porridge (quite solid, not milk with flakes) and one fuit pot (or real fruit) plus 4 bfeeds.

If I look at the chart, he should have gained around 300 - 400 gr in 4 weeks whilst he put on a bit more than 1kg :(

Think you may need to talk to your HV again and maybe ask for a referral. If she wants you to cut down on solids you need clear advice on how to do this.

My DD had reflux. She was below 9 th until the reflux cleared up, at about 8 months for her. Once reflux was gone she ate like a horse and went up to nearly 90 th at 14 months. My HV was worried too. But after 14 th month she levelled off and was about 60/ 70 th by second birthday. This was actually the centile she was born on, but then went down to 9th within a few weeks of being born. I put it down to the reflux which I think meant she didn't grow as fast as she should have until it cleared up and then made up for it.

So perhaps your DS is doing a similar thing? But I think JJJ is right, it might be a good idea to discuss with your HV. My HV thinks her reflux had nothing to do with my DDs weight by the way.
