I began weaning my prem DD1 at 22 weeks, as advised by the HCP's, and she took to it like a gem, no fuss or spitting out etc, despite not really outwardly showing signs of being ready (sitting unaided, putting stuff in her mouth). We did a mix of spoon and quickly onto BLW.
7 years on, I am trying to wean full-term DD2. I felt she was ready to try at about 21 weeks, as she was trying to get stuff of my plate, and could sit unaided for very brief periods, and I was quite prepared not to push it if she turned out not to be ready. Being a bit quick I began with puree and sure enough, she managed well initially, used her tongue appropriately and she didn't spit much out. She's 6 months this week and has decided that she doesn't want anything off a spoon, clamps mouth shut after a couple of bites and turns head away, or spits it out with the bubbles she is blowing in it
. She'll pick up food herself and puts it in. Sometimes she spits it out again, if she gets too big a lump in there, and gets cross if said food snaps in her hand before getting it to her mouth (eg banana ends up as puree in her hand sometimes
).
Is this just my cue to abandon the spoon and let her get on with it?
