Is this just my cue to abandon the spoon altogether?

I began weaning my prem DD1 at 22 weeks, as advised by the HCP's, and she took to it like a gem, no fuss or spitting out etc, despite not really outwardly showing signs of being ready (sitting unaided, putting stuff in her mouth). We did a mix of spoon and quickly onto BLW.

7 years on, I am trying to wean full-term DD2. I felt she was ready to try at about 21 weeks, as she was trying to get stuff of my plate, and could sit unaided for very brief periods, and I was quite prepared not to push it if she turned out not to be ready. Being a bit quick I began with puree and sure enough, she managed well initially, used her tongue appropriately and she didn't spit much out. She's 6 months this week and has decided that she doesn't want anything off a spoon, clamps mouth shut after a couple of bites and turns head away, or spits it out with the bubbles she is blowing in it Hmm. She'll pick up food herself and puts it in. Sometimes she spits it out again, if she gets too big a lump in there, and gets cross if said food snaps in her hand before getting it to her mouth (eg banana ends up as puree in her hand sometimesGrin).

Is this just my cue to abandon the spoon and let her get on with it?

Yes!

My dc2 would never and still never let me feed him. He's just not interested.

He doesn't even like using the spoon himself, other than for yoghurt.

He looks like an Oompa Loompa after spaghetti Bol! ( he's now one)

Let her get on with it.

Thanks for replying 3 Smile
Can I just ask when you started to wean? I am doubting myself now, and thinking I might have started too early

Around 7 months with my pfb
Around 6 months with dc2

But if your dd seems interested in food and you take things slowly I'd follow her lead.

I had a Hv and mw home app a few weeks ago. The Hv said no weaning til 6 months, when she left the mw said I didn't have to wait til 6 months-17 weeks is fine!!

My newbie was 6 weeks at the time and I never brought weaning up!

Let your dd lead Wink
