What kind of milk do you use in food? ( for 6mo )

Just wondering whether to use cows milk or formula just for mixing up baby rice and porridge in ds' meals. He's just turned 6mo so only just started weaning and I don't really know what the hell I'm doing! Am still breastfeeding for milk feeds so although packets say to make up with 'baby's usual milk' I can't really do that... Bit of a faff to express just for the oz or 2 needed for rice, plus I can't usually squeeze much out anyway. I thought formula might be best seeing as its fortified with iron? Or is that a swizz and its better to just use full-fat cows milk? ( This is my mums opinion!) Also are all formulas similar or is there a 'best' one? I know this kind of thing is my decision but I just want to give him what's best and I don't really know what is besides continuing to bf!

My DS was fully breastfed when we started weaning and I didn't get on with expressing so went for cow's milk for use with solids and didn't have any problem. I agree with your mum - DS will be getting loads of nutrients from your breastmilk still and will only be consuming tiny amounts of porridge and rice at first, so so the type of milk used for these solids will make no difference. You might want to call up your health visitor for the NHS-approved answer if you are still worried though :-)

I used organic whole milk in the same situation.

ShhhhhGoBackToSleep · 30/12/2012 21:49

I use organic whole milk too.

IShallCallYouSquishy · 30/12/2012 21:53

I use EBM if I happen to have some or whole milk

Just use cows milk, don't waste money on formula. DS doesn't really need baby porridge or baby rice at 6mo though - regular adult stuff is fine.

daisydee43 · 30/12/2012 21:57

I use cow and gate follow on but tbh she has cows milk in yog

DewDr0p · 30/12/2012 22:02

Cow's milk is great.

daisydee43 · 31/12/2012 09:44

Cows milk has less nutrients than baby's milk so it's normally advised to use cows milk when a year old.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 31/12/2012 09:46

Cows milk

TrazzleMISTLEtoes · 31/12/2012 09:46

Cow's milk in food is fine. Should be whole milk though.

FredFredGeorge · 31/12/2012 09:49

daisydee43 Not really, that advice is about the "main drink" and is actually more to do with the salt balance in cows milk rather than any deficiency in nutrients.

There is no harm in making porridge with cows milk, and very little benefit in using formula.

CanIHaveAPetGiraffePlease · 31/12/2012 09:55

Same as above. Cows milk is fine in cooking as long as main drink is bf or formula. Ditto to normal porridge and normal rice. No need to buy 'baby aisle' food at all 6months on.

Wow thanks, that looks like a consensus. Am relieved actually as one of the benefits off breastfeeding is not making formula and I thought I had to make some up just in order to serve solid food which massively adds to the time ds has to watch me making food, not his favourite activity! Mind you, have just had another argument with dh about getting him entirely onto formula instead but that's another thread Sad

PenelopeChipShop If your DH wants him on formula he must be bonkers - the best thing about breast feeding is that I never have to get up in the night Smile
