god morningpaper, a shepherds/cottage pie without any gravy in it? Jesus that would be so dry!

I generally make gravy from the veg juices from the steamer, the meat juices and some mixed up gravy powder eg bisto. Same with shepherd's pie only I also would use a stock cube.

Anyway, I made her some lasagne instead Grin

Agree that weaning is a fraught business these days and was probably lots easier 30 years ago!

now ds is 9 months he has some gravy mashed in.
if you think about it, the small amount he etas would only be about a tablespoon anyway and i dont add any salt to anything else so its ok for him to have. if me and dh want it, we sprinkle some on ours after i have dished it up.

Mogwai I use wine and water and a teaspoon of Marigold bouillon powder in Shepherd's pie - I never make it with gravy - I had no idea people put gravy in shepherd's pie

I use wine in everything, droool, much prefer it to icky stock cubes

Cannot be ARSED to make own lamb stock EVER

so ladies, just to clarify, i made a cottage pie last night using just gravy grans and tom puree as sauce (lazy i know) so would it be a really bad idea to give some to Ds who is one next month?

Bugsy2 · 21/04/2006 12:07

Homemade gravy is fine as long as you didn't season it with a load of salt.
Gravy granules are full of salt & monosodium glutamate & other horrors and therefore not very good for small children or babies.

I give them shep pie but not gravy on top, and the oldest is 5! They don't like it anyway so never started. Not planning to try it anytime soon with the dts neither and they are 13 months.

I add a very small amount of gravy in DS's roast dinners just to taste really. Re:salt intake in gvay....there is salt in lots of food we feed babies eg cheese, bread, etc. If you buy jars of food abroad they add salt to them. I think, obviously avoid as much as possible but a touch of gravy in a meal is of little matter if they are eating plenty of other non-salty food.
