Tripp Trapp or Antilop

I apologise if this should be in products firstly!

Ok so I have spent far too much time researching both of these highchairs.
They both do roughly the same thing....it's just the cost.

My lovely dad will happily pay for either so it's not about the money although I don't want him paying for something just because IYKWIM.

My DS1 used his (nightmare to clean) Chico chair until he was 3.5. He is easily distracted so having him in a highchair kept his attention on eating.

This is the only thing really putting me off the Ikea one, it looks small so they would outgrow it quickly?

well, I put my 3.5 year old in the antilop the other week, as he wouldn't sit properly at the table, and the threat was if he didn't he's go in baby brothers high chair.
He fitted just fine (tho he's not huge).
I'd honestly try ikea if you don't need it to fold away - have you not still got the chicco? The antilop has done both my boys.

I have both and much prefer the Tripp Trapp. It looks better and takes up less room- the antilop legs stick out really get in the way. Everyone always says that the antilop is easy to clean - I disagree. I find food really sticks to it.

I think the Tripp Trapp comes into its element as they get older. DD is 2.2 and we've taken off the baby set and she climbs in and out herself. I think we'll be using it for a while and so overall it's been one of our best baby purchases.

Thanks for those replies. My DS1 isn't massive and looks like his brother will be long & slim so maybe would get use out of the ikea one.

The Chico one has been condemned to the bin- it lasted 3.5 years of messy eating,play dough, painting etc.

Most things DS2 has are hand me downs so this would be the 1 big splurge for something of his own.

Does the Tripp Trapp adjust to different table heights?
Any experience of using the clic clac tray with it?

You can't put a tripp trapp in the dishwasher....

i put 3yo DS1 in an antilop in Ikea recently and he was fine.

he also loved his chicco with all its crevices and i only just evicted him to a booster seat just before he turned 3. it's still in good condition for DS2 so unfortunately can't justify anything new. :(

even if we replaced it with the Ikea one, i think my PIL would wonder where the nice high chair they bought had gone

You can adjust the Tripp Trapp to lower table heights, but there's only so high it will go. We've got it on the highest level and it's the perfect height for a standard table. I didn't bother getting the tray as I figured that was what the table's for. My justification for the cost of the Tripp Trapp is we're never going to need a booster seat as it sees them right through until they can sit on a normal chair.

It is a lot of money but should have resale value too.

Don't underestimate the Tripp trapp tray.....it's fab, any spills are contained, and it will protect your table (both my DD's loved to bang cutlery). It great doing craft stuff too.

I have had both - had the antilop till 18 months and now the Tripp trapp. The antilop was cheaper than the tt babyset so I saved money overall. Perfectly happy with both, but there is no way the ikea one would have lasted any longer - dd hates to be confined.

We have a tripp trapp that DS and I both love. DS can climb onto it now by himself since we took the baby attachment thing off. You can adjust it to different table heights, and as the child grows, it's super easy to clean and when DS wants to sit on my seat for a change I can sit on his quite happily (which he finds hysterical of course).

The only time we used an antilop we hated it. Sticky out legs we kept tripping over, impossible to get it right up to the table and such a huge seat bit that DS kept dropping food down his trousers.

Tripp trapp every time. Dd1 is 8 and still uses hers (as do I when we run out of chairs if we have lots of people over!)

Easy to clean, looks good, takes up hardly any space, completely adjustable.

If you have the cash then Tripp Trapp. Lovely piece of furniture. Matches current dining set & can be used for many years.

My dog would also vote for the Tripp Trapp. The footboard is the perfect height for his front paws so he can engage in continuous clean-up operations for the duration of DS's 'meal' (read: flinging food everywhere except his mouth).

Antilop all the way. It's fab.

And if you change your mind next month and wish you'd got the other one, you've only spent a tenner so no great loss.

As mentioned above, the antilop costs less than the Tripp trapp baby set, so why not get ikea chair for early days then move to Tripp trapp. The antilop is great for taking places too as the legs come off and so easy to store later for visiting friends.

Ikea does junior chairs so no need for a booster.

The junior chair is £30 or £36 depends on which one you choose. So even if add up the cost of that and the antilop, it will still be a lot cheaper than the Tripp trapp.

BabyDan Dan Chair is just as good as the TrippTrapp and a third of the price! We have that and the Antilop for when we visit peoples houses without kids.

Definitely antilop here. We were willing to spend the cash on a trip trap but very glad we stuck with the antilop. Been through dishwasher already!

Get the Antilop first. It costs less than the TT baby set. When the child has stopped throwing food everywhere and outgrows it, you could get a nice Tripp Trapp so they can sit up to the table. As Wrigglebum said, we did similar. I think Tripp Trapp for babies looks a bit contrived.

I should say we did have two Tripp Trapps from about age 2 to age 6 for both children, would still have them except building work forced a big selling off of anything valuable.

We have 2 Tripp Trapps (and 3 kids) and love them. One is 8 years old and still looks good as new.

DD is nearly 6 and still uses hers, she is only a little thing and the extra height is helpful. I like that the children can get in and out and up and down independently (though that might be a disadvantage to you).

We've got Tripp Trapp's for our 5 DD's and they are just brilliant - they last far longer than the Antilops as you just keep putting the seat down every time they get bigger.
One of my DD's Occupational Therapists came to our house and explained how good TT's are for children's development (not just highchair age) as its actually really important for them to be at the right height for the table. She also said that they are brilliant for younger babies when they are just sitting as its a brilliant position for them to be in.
We've never had the trays for ours as I just think the point behind TT's is that you have DC's up at the table from the beginning - but FWIW, friends have said that they are good.
Definitely a good investment I'd say :)

MerylStrop my 19mo DD can get in and out of our normal adult dining chair. Don't need a TT for the independence .

Yeah, but adult chairs are not the right height for sitting at a dining table if you are 2 (or 6, in DD's case).

I don't particularly think that independent entry and exit from the antilop would be something you'd want to encourage.

That said, I think the antilop is brilliant for the money.
