When do you stop all the steralising malarky?

Have a nearly 7month old son and am beginning to get to grips with the solids. But what I want to know is what do other mums do about steralising?

I know bottles need to be done until they're one. But I'm also steralising the ice cube trays and containers that that I freeze his food into. I don't steralise the dishes or spoons, or his cups.

Am sick to death of st. the ice cube trays - it takes ages, anyone stopped doing this at 7 months? All seems quite mad to me when he's showing signs of crawling and puts everything and anything in his mouth.

Squarer have read all of the RTkangamummy thread (am now completely boss eyed) thanks for the link - it's answered lots of questions so off I go to get rid of the sterilizer.

Ohhhhh feel a bit strange now......it's a bit like losing a leg!!

lol. I found that I washed the bottles about 3 times for a little while until I truly got used to the idea of being without it. They become such familiar items in the litchen don't they... boiling away Smile

jmum6 · 24/03/2006 12:26

Have just made up some rice pud, and pear puree AND put them into unsterlised ice cube trays. Feel such a daredevil. Have to say I had to force myself not to sterilse them. It's so hard to let go!!

I love these threads. I just imagine mothers across the land loosing the shackles of constant sterilising, breaking free and running over hills with hair flying in the wind. 'Run free mothers of Britain etc etc'
I'm so happy that I never sterilised anything with either of mine.

harrogatemum · 24/03/2006 13:47

I sterilised bottles until the DTs were 6 months. Then we went to Australia and my SIL didnt have a steriliser anymore so we didnt bother.

They seem fine to me!

I have never in my life sterilised a bowl or a spoon or a knife or anything.

welshmum · 24/03/2006 14:14

oops...that sounded a bit smug, wasn't meant to. Apologies

Squarer · 24/03/2006 15:49

Not to me Welshmum! Quite a funny image actually Grin

jodie1984 · 24/03/2006 16:10

i just sterilised ds's bottles without thinking, i will try harder tomorrow

jmum6 · 24/03/2006 16:15

Oh dear - it's so hard to let go isn't it? :)

Squarer · 24/03/2006 16:18

ha ha! It is such a hard habit to break!! I used to get all twitchy. Best way to do it and stick to it is to remove ALL sterilising apparatus from the kitchen Smile

jmum6 · 24/03/2006 16:37

It's a bit like being an alcoholic (humour me!)you have to get rid of it all from the house so you won't be tempted. I haven't actually got rid of sterilizer and can't force myself to stop doing the bottles yet - but at least made a start with the ice cube trays. :O

jmum6 · 24/03/2006 18:07

But some progress is better than none!! :o

Changing the subject - when can you start to give tap water instead of cooled boiled water?

OP posts:
donnie · 24/03/2006 18:12

love this thread! but seriously, I give dd2 ( 10 months) tap water and it is fine.I also plan to try abd get her slowly on to cow's milk in the next couple of months ( she's formula at the mo).A sterilising free routine is great!!!

Squarer · 24/03/2006 19:24

I stuck with the boiled tap water for a bit longer (for some odd reason I can't quite explain). Tap water all the way now of course!

Out of interest, how are you going to wean onto cows milk Donnie?

minxy125 · 24/03/2006 19:41

Sterilised till 6 months then ds started sucking fringe on rug at every opportunity so I dont worry too much now!
