weaning problem, advice needed please

I have been advised to wean my DS (slightly early at 5 months) by a paediatrician. So far I have tried baby rice, banana, carrots and apple. He seems to like them first of all and then the second or third time I give anything to him he gags and has been quite sick straightaway. Seems to lull me into a false sense of security ! - lets me think I've cracked it and then the next day he takes a spoonful, retches and is sick. Any thoughts/comments/advice appreciated !

No advice I'm afraid. My ds is 6 and a half mths and has stopped taking solids (after taking them brilliantly from 4 and a half mths). The lazy toad is holding out for his bottles (according to hv) and i've got to not give in. So now I'm to give him solids and if he won't take it i'm not to give in and give him his milk!! So have a very unhappy ds at mo!

It can take a while for them to go from milk to solids, even if the solids seem very runny to us. I would just make sure that whatever you give is very pureed and take it slowly.

Why are you having to wean early btw?

Sounds like a nightmare jmum6 ! Best of luck - my Ds would scream the house down if I didn't give him a bottle when wanted !

Could it be that at 5 mths he's still not fully lost the tongue thrust reflex - where if a baby feels something in their mouth they have an automatic reaction to get rid of it. But I'm not sure gagging and being sick is part of that reflex. It should disappear by 6 months (I guess another reason for the 6 mth weaning guideline).

I would definitely ask the peadiatrician who advised you to wean cos gagging on food doesn't sound right at all.

Soudsn liek eh ahsn't fully lost his reflex so tbh I'd leave it. how sloppy are the purees ?

jmum6 Shock at hv - milk is still a key source of nutrients up to a year old, not surprised he isn't happy ! as long as he will take some solids I wouldn't worry, perhaps he is teething.

Thanks beansprout, I guess I'll just have to keep trying. The reason for weaning early was that my DS was born v small (low birth weight, was taking a lot of milk each day and the feeds were getting closer and closer together (about every hour and a half !). He was also sleeping through the night but waking up so hungry that he was bolting the bottle down and then vomiting it all up again. The paed suggested that some solids would help.

hv said as long as he has 20 floz of milk a day it will be alright. He gets 3 bottles of 8foz a day. Is that about right?
