solids, swallowing and tongue tie

DS2 is 10m and had a ptt snipped at about 18 weeks. I think it has partially regrown since then he doesn't seem to have great tongue movement and breastfeeding, whilst a bit better, still isn't brilliant.

We started weaning (traditional stuff, finger foods and mush) at 6 months and for a couple of months most things just seemed to come back out again. I wasn't that worried as I know it can take time for them to get used to chewing, swallowing etc. Then I thought he got a bit better but now I just think he can't swallow very well because he can't move the food to the back of his mouth with his tongue and I'm getting more concerned that he's not really getting a good diet (he's still breastfeeding but has never had very long or frequent feeds so it's not as if he's making up for it with lots of milk). He quite enjoys putting finger foods in his mouth and having a chew but then a minute or so later, a lot of it comes back out again. He coughs and splutters a bit, but not worryingly so and isn't sick. He enjoys water from a sippy cup but again, splutters a bit. He's better when I spoon feed him mush but never opens his mouth very wide.

He must be getting something as he's pooing a few times a day and looks like a reasonable weight (not had him weighed for a couple of months but he was following the 50th centile at that point). But I'm wondering if that's because I'm making an effort to give him hearty calorific spooned stuff like avocado / scrambled egg etc.

I'm sure DS1 ate much better than this at this age but I just can't remember! I suppose what I'm asking is a)do babies without tongue tie sometimes take ages to get the hang of eating properly and b)do babies with tongue tie ever get round to learning how to eat well? I really want to avoid the stress for him (and me) of considering a further tongue tie revision but obviously would like him to be eating happily and healthily at some point in the not too distant future....

Thanks for any words of wisdom!

apricot haven't really got any experience of TT. If you post in the Breast & Bottle section you might get some more posts as there are some posters with experience. HTH

Hi @apricot72- I realise it’s been a loooong time since this post! But I’ve been scouring the net trying to find some info or another baby like my little boy. He sounds exactly the same as your little one was in regards to coughing/spluttering and solids.

I’m not sure what to do at the moment and he’s my first.

Also has had a tongue tie procedure.

How’d you and your little one end up getting on?

If you are still around and do end up seeing/replying to this... I really truly appreciate it!

@SoraSky how did you end up getting on with your baby? We are just starting weaning now and facing the same challenge

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 15/04/2023 16:25

We had exactly this although ours was a missed TT.

At 12 months he just started eating, until then the only thing he'd have in any quantity was super smooth purées.

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto thank you for responding that’s really reassuring to hear! We had my babies tongue tie cut twice previously and it STILL reattached so we decided not to cut it a third time. Just hoping as he gets bigger his tongue will grow and stretch out the tie and he’ll be able to eat better :(
