Started weaning ds a few weeks ago and he has taken to it really well. we have dropped a bottle because he didnt seem to want 5 so he still has 4 full 8oz bottles, breakfast and lunch (not introduced tea yet). He has breakfast after his bottle and then lunch between bottles with water but he wont take it. I have tried a sippy cup, bottle and free flow cup (he wears most of the drink with that) and I have even tried adding the smallest amount of baby juice just to flavour it but he just wont take it. he puts the bottle in his mouth and might take a few sips or teethe on it but wont drink it. if i keep trying he just gets upset. any ideas?

I would honestly say don't worry about it - it seems to be one of those things that often comes with time. My ds is 11 months and has just about figured out how to use a free flow cup now, but still doesn't really drink much water. I offer it to him at mealtimes and at other times throughout the day (when he normally is more receptive to it) He eats a lot of fruit which provides him with a fair bit of fluid, but at 6 months, I have to say I don't think he drank any water really Smile

it takes time, its not instant, took DS a few months to get the hang of water but he's drunk it well since. 6mths to a year is all about experimentation

IMO people give up too quickly on water and say "they wont take it" when they are still at the "what is this?" stage, stick with it and they WILL drink it, mix it with cordial or juice now and they might never take water

thanks, will just stick with water and a sippy cup then and he can take it when he is ready. think I have just been bothered with the hot weather but I guess if he is thirsty he would drink it. Do you think i should just keep offering it to him everyday and if he takes it he takes it?

yeah that's what I did, it was always there, he didn't drink it for ages, then he did and has since

Took DD till 10mo to figure it out. Really don't worry and keep offering.

Took dd months and months. And months! Don't worry! A friend's baby stopped bf and wouldn't take any liquids to drink, in any firm, from 7mo until after a year (no ff nor bf when she tried to reintroduce it). He was fine.

we are still struggling at 14mo!

Dd at pp. My dd is nearly 14mo, and is still struggling with a beaker, and still has 5 bottles. And she eats like a horse :)

Ditto at pp. Doh!
