Hi, have been doing blw for just over a month with my 7 mo dd. She enthusiastically put food in her mouth, breaks bits of & gums it, but it mostly gets spit back out/falls out. When will she start swallowing? Thanks all :)

She might actually be swallowing now and you don't realise. This is when looking at baby poo becomes the norm as you start to see bits of food swallowed whole Grin

We started at 6 months too, I would say she progressed quickly to 'eating' at around 7 to 7.5 months. Some babies take a bit longer, others "get it" straight away. Just relax and trust that whilst she's putting food in her mouth she playing, learning and improving her hand coordination.

Good luck Wink

A few bits started showing in DS's nappies right from the start, but he didn't start eating a good volume of food until he turned 1. Some kids are hungrier than others!

I think they swallow more than it looks. dd is 7mo and starting to swallow but does with the strangest things. She munched and swallowed breadsticks, pitta bread, eggy bread, but struggles with mashed potato. Strange girl.

Your dc will be swallowing more than it looks and it will imcrease week on week.

Started BLW with my DD the day she turned 6 months. We didn't think she'd swallowed anything at all at her first meal until 5hrs later when 2 whole lumps of banana turned up in her nappy! Her tummy is obviously working a bit better 2 weeks on as although we still get lumps her poo is thicker so she's started to digest stuff. But if I went by what goes in and out her mouth alone, I wouldn't think she had swallowed anything at all! It's so hard to tell

It really depends on the baby. I've done baby-led weaning with my son since just before 6 months. He was visibly and audibly swallowing food by 8 months, but I would find food in his poo before that. Some babies don't swallow much before they're a year old though.

Straight away for mine but how much is digested is a different thing. My lo is allergic to egg, we found this out when he vomited it all up and he had swallowed far more than I had realised. Not quite how I wanted to find out though!
