Hi, I am about to start weaning my baby. Is it ok to use any pears and apples or do u recommend any specific kind (braeburn/golden apples, packam/rocha pears)? Let me know, I have no clue how to start with....

i would suggest neither because they are both quite acidic (gave dd terrible wind anyway). I'd use carrot, sweet potato or something like that instead. or baby rice.

I really don't think it matters, although if you think that Granny Smiths are quite sour.

I always used to buy a ready done bag of them. You normally have to cook the apples anyway to get a puree.

I used red apples mainly Gala as they were a bit sweeter and another sort of pear possibly Williams! Peeled, chopped, stewed (15-20 mins) and pureed.

I used Red Gala (as that's what I eat anyway), peeled, chopped, stewed, squashed

Carrot & broccoli worked for us! Still does, although DS v. fond of Gala & Rocha or Conference

don't know how true this is ,but my hv told me to start with rice and pears because noone is allergic to them.

The biggest you can find to save peeling time in making purees.

My DH is a terrible apple snob - only gives DD Coxes or Egremont Russets. I can just see her when she's older - 'But Daddy says Golden Delicious are rubbish!' Blush

BTW we find pears vg for loosening up a baby with constipation....

just started weaning ds about a 2 mos ago. gave baby rice for quite a while just to get him used to the idea of eating. when i finally introduced tastes, sweet potato and carrot go down a treat. he does ok with apple and pear now, but i agree with senora...think they can be a bit windy on little bellies

bundle · 02/03/2006 16:15

with ripe pears you may not even need to poach/steam...simply peel n sieve

vava · 02/03/2006 17:57

thk u for all these tips...i have been giving him baby rice with the 6/6:30pm for 2 weeks now. He's now 5mth 1/2 and seems hungry and even more unsettled and sleeps even less at night so it's time to start with fruits & vegetables....i am following Gina Ford weaning plan but just was wondering if it was better to use specific kind of apples and pears...Do u always wait until they are ripe to cook them or it doesn't matter? do they have to be cooked as soon as bought?
