BLW and puking

Evening all
Need some blw advice please!!
LO is 24 weeks old (and was 12 days late too, apparently this matters?) and for the last few days we have started to give him bits of food. He has been sitting independently for a month, grabbing food from our plates and showing all the other signs of readiness according to Rapley etc
I have been giving him veg (peppers, sweet potato and cucumber mainly) and porridge fingers/weetabix and tonight tried to give him some lamb burger. Everything he's tried he's had a good suck/chew on so far. My questions are:
He gags on anything that makes it near being swallowed and spits it out. Is that normal? Does he need to learn to swallow?!
He had a major puke/gag tonight which he found really upsetting, lots and lots of milk came out because of a bit of mince going down. Is that normal ?
He has a bad cough at the moment and I'm wondering if that's making it hard to swallow food as well. Should we stop for a while do you think? Maybe until the cough has gone? He really enjoys getting hold of the food and sucking it, but it's the swallowing part that is awful!!
Any advice appreciated :)

He is a bit little for BLW. Advice is 6 months before you try giving him finger food.

Other than that, gagging is completely normal as he learns how to deal with solid food. It won't hurt him and although it's scary to watch/hear, it is not the same as choking.

We had quite a bit of it too when we started. It only happens rarely now. My view - on whether or not to contInue because of his cough - is that so long as he's interested in food keep going. Take his lead.

Thanks for the replies, think we're going to keep going but just with veg/fruit as he is really interested and I do want to be led by him. Just have to hope he learns to swallow soon as its horrible!!

My last DC swallowed then puked a huge piece of chicken when BLW at 6 months exactly. I puréed meat for a bit after that as it freaked me out. Still did BLW but let her feed herself with a spoon. Don't be afraid of using spoons, you can still BLW successfully.

My baby puked, I left it for a couple of weeks & started again, she has been fine since. I think she wasn't quite ready. Gagging/spitting out seems to be the norm for us too. Most chunks get spat out again!
