Weaning - how??!

Hi all,

We started our DS on purees a couple of weeks ago and whilst we were only giving him 1 meal a day it was going quite well - he was open to most of the foods I gave him (apart from carrot which he REALLY didnt like!) and seemed to be enjoying the experience. He was also having some finger foods such as rice cakes. Now however, we've been trying to give him two meals a day (breakfast and lunch) and things have gone downhill a bit. I feel like I can't get the timings right so I'm constantly either breastfeeding him or giving him solids and he's whining throughout both. I don't think he's actually hungry enough for a proper meal in either and so isn't get enough of either throughout the day. His naps are still all over the place, and whilst they were never perfect, he has started only dropping off if he is fed to sleep which he hasnt done since he was newborn - is this a sign he's not getting enough milk?

I guess what I would like to know is......am I doing this right??! Do you breastfeed then offer solids straight away? Or breastfeed then wait 30-60mins then offer solids? Or give solids first then top up with breastmilk afterwards? Also do you have set timings for the 'solids' meal and fit everything else around it? Or do you base the meal times on their nap schedule?

Arrrghhh so much to think about!!! Am I just over thinking it??! Please stop me from going crazy!

Thanks in advance :)

Breastfeed then solids an hour later. Don't worry about moving onto more meals quicker than he's ready to, if he only wants a spoonful, so be it. Let him dictate the speed at which milk is dropped. My son didn't drop any feeds til around 9 months. The first few weeks are hard trying to fit it all in but just remember the milk is the important thing, the food is just for trying out at this stage.

Sounds like you're doing fine.

Thanks Pascha for speedy response and vote of confidence! You are right of course, think I need to chill out a bit and let him dictate how much he wants. Thanks again :)
