HELP! Constipated 7 month old!!!!

My son has bad constipation and has had it on and off since weaning began a month ago.
At the moment he is miserable as he wants to go but when he does he cries, a small lump comes out and his bottom bleeds, not a massive amount but I can see little abrasions. Sudocrem sorts these out.
I've tried giving him water but he doesn't like it much and won't drink enough to shift it- I'm reluctant to put any squash etc in it as I want him to eventually drink water.
I have given him 1ml of 'Califig' (it says 1 year olds can have 2.5-5ml) as I'm desperate.
It's awful to see him in pain but can do nothing.
Any tips? Or has anyone used Califig? How long does it take to work?

Have you tried prunes or prune juice? This is what the Dr suggested to me. I soaked dried prunes in boiled water for a couple of hours then squirted around 2ml of the liquid in her mouth woth a dropper. You can then puree the prunes and freeze/use. Dd loves them!

You poor thing, and esp him! You must get more fluids into him, how about mixing a little apple juice in with the water? Definitely don't give him squash, yuk!

What are you weaning him on? Banana is meant to be particularly bad for constipation. I would cut back a little on the solids if I were you and up his milk intake, particularly if you're formula feeding as you can water the feed down a bit to get some more liquid into him that way.

Have you spoken to your hv? I'd be reluctant to give something not suitable for under 1s.

Another tip from my hv was raisin water, boil a handful of raisins in the water, leave to cool (scoop the raisins out) and then because it's a bit sweeter they are keener to drink it.

Hope some of that helps - I don't think a lack of response within 10 mins on a Saturday afternoon warrants a "thanks a bunch" to be honest.

My dd had this.

Lay off the pasta/bread anything stodgy and just give fluids, fluids ,fluids. I found so many ways to get extra liquid into her. Make up solids with lots of water. She was older tho so I could also give jellies, ice lollies, soups etc.

Also massage his tum ( anti clockwise I think), warm baths and some sort of chair to help him 'go'. Mine always went in those bouncy chairs , renamed the poo chair in our house.

Try Organix porrige with prune ( if you can still get it.) Tastes very sweet but did the trick with my dd couple of years ago.......in fact i remember BIG nappies !!

brocolli reaaaaaaaaally helped dd with constipation. OR Dtied apricots in normal purees - some people say to sieve the puree to remove skins but I don't bother every time

do you think the fact he is on soya formula has bunged him up? it seems to coincide with this but i'm not 100%.
anyone else's on soya formula?

i have had this same problem on and off since weaning my 6.5 month old. the prune porrige by organix (i think) can be bought from sainsbury's and does the trick. give it for breakfast (half atub) after cereal, or after any meal in fact. this seems to work. also prescribed lactulose which i am told is perfectly safe for under ones (but contains sugar) so after having tried water, fruit juice and more water, prune porridge did the trick. also mean't she was getting her meal at the same time.

when it was really bad (bleeding bum, straining, crying...yes we've had it all...heartbreaking) i laid off solids for at least 2 days and just let her drink formula....the change of formula (if you have recently) will also be a factor (it was for us when we switched to nanny's goatmilk formula to helo with excema...long story) anyway i thought i'd rather deal with non life threatening excema than let her go through that again, so once i switched back to my normal aptimal she was regular again....

sorry a bit jumbled up, but i hope this asures you that you're not alone and there are solutions

OK... I'm not saying this is the best method - but it's an old wive's remedy & it worked on mine..... A splodge of vaseline pushed up where the sun don't shine!!!!!!! A bit of lubrication works wonders!

Hipp do organic juices - my baby loves the apple and pear one. My niece never used to drink water (as my daughter won't - hence the juice!) but is now 18 months old and can't get enough of the stuff! So don't worry, giving juice now doesn't apparently necessarily mean they'll never drink water. My plan is to gradually reduce the amount of juice and incease the water until it is just water and hope she doesn't notice!!

By the way, next door neighbour with 6 month old had same problem on soya formula.

poor baby. my dr told me brown sugar in boiled water, or raisins in boiled water.. massage tummy too, warm baths, kick around with no nappy on. ds used to scream for ages then produce 1 pebble...
