DD is 7 mths on the 25 th. been weaning since 5mths. Puréed food so far - fruit, veg, meat and fish. She lives it all. Good apatite. Last few days I have been trying her on finger foods that have been reccomended on plen of threads here - But I have had to whip her out of the high chair to whack her on the back as she chokes on food several times now - what am I doing wrong - I am really put off. She is chewing on things.

Is she definitely definitely choking? Gagging can look similar but is not dangerous.

as Lady said, are you sure she is choking?

I was always told that gagging is noisy and choking is silent

It's like she's got it stuck and she starts going red and eyes stream - a few times it's comes back out by its self before I take action but I am so worried to just leave her to 'see ' if it's gagging.

Have you noticed if there are some types of finger food this happens more with? If so might be worth avoiding those for a week or two and then trying again. My dd coped best with 'soft' finger foods at first (we did lbw, sort of), the type that would break down easily in the mouth, like roasted sweet potato, soft broccoli, mango etc. Watch and see what she copes best with and then try to find other 'similar' things and build up from there (and give her large chunks of food that she has to gum/bite pieces off rather than small bite-size pieces, if you're not already)

There are some food that's easier to handle when you first introduce finger foods. We did BLW. I remember, like diyqueen, that the soft foods are definitely easier to handle. Roast veg, mini burger patties, brocolli, plums.

I take it you are doing traditional weaning? (And not stopping purees and switching completely to self feeding). Then just introduce say one finger food each meal, and take it slow? It sounds like your DD needs to learn how to chew instead of simply 'drinking' the solids down her throat. If you are just thinking of introducing lumps, instead of self feeding, maybe try spoon feeding couscous or mini pasta soups?
