When can I give grapes and blueberries whole instead of halving them every time?

Dd is 17mo, has 12 teeth and is confident chewing. BUT I obviously don't want her to choke if it's still a risk.

I think it's 3-5yo for grapes. I just squash them flat instead of cutting them. I've never halved blueberries or other small fruit though.

Blueberries are fine as they are; no need to halve them. The problem with grapes is the size, and the strength of the skin. 3 years for grapes.

Thanks!

3 years for grapes. Oops, I stopped doing this for DS when he got teeth at about 11mo and I am pleased/relieved to say he is still alive!

I am just weaning DD (6mo) now and atm I pierce my finger in a blueberry before giving it to her and peel grapes.

oops i have been giving grapes to my daughter since about 20 months

Around 3-5 years depending on the child.

I don't think grapes are as big a risk as cherry tomatoes. At least grapes have a weakness in the skin where the stalk is attached so they squish easier.

I still halve grapes at 3.5 and will do for a while yet. It depends on the child I suppose but neither I mine can sit still for a second and they eat so fast! I do let the 7year old have them whole but she has to be sat down properly.

Seeing babies with whole grapes in restaurants makes me feel horribly anxious, I've been known to move seat do I can't see. It's since I read about that poor toddler who choked on a grape in a supermarket and one noticed till they got to the till. So :( and not a risk with taking IMO.

worldgonecrazy I halve cherry tomatoes too, although I wondered if I was being a bit PFB...

There have been quite a few threads in the past asking this question. Having read posts from drs, nurses and parents who have watched under 5 s choke on grapes , I would always follow their advice and cut the grape up.

Yy there have been some really harrowing things posted on here about choking. Better safe than sorry I recon.
