7 month old too much milk

I am doing blw with my breast fed dd and she is still having 5 feeds during the day and 1 or 2 at night. Sometimes even after she had sat in high hair and had some food and water if she hadn't fed for a few hours as I get her out she is leaning back getting in feeding position. She is just above 75th centile and mainly I am getting a bit of stick about over feeding her milk from some family members. Some meals she manages quite a bit of good others not much and sometimes I only offer 1 or 2 meals a day if she is sleeping at my other dc mealtimes or we are out (too messy) is this ok?

My DD (also 7mo, also BLW) hasn't dropped any milk feeds yet. She has 4 bottles a day of 8oz each. I think it's fine-they're not really eating properly yet at this stage so still need the nutrients from their milk.

TanteRose · 08/05/2012 10:56

Perfectly fine - she should still be getting the bulk of her nutrients from milk at this stage. Remember the saying "Food is just for fun til they're one"

My DD breastfed every two or three hours round the clock until she was a year old

It is absolutely fine. At 7m she is only just starting her journey into food and solids tend to be a nice little addition to carrying on with the current feeding. She sounds like she is thriving and doing fine. Are you and she happy with how she is doing?

Some days they do eat more than others - my children still do now, it is very normal. A BF baby will regulate their own intake of milk - if she doesn't want it she won't feed. Probably one of those times to Smile and Nod then Ignore Wink

I would maybe try to offer solids 2-3 times a day - what worries you about the mess when you are out? I would sometimes take a couple of tiny sandwiches and some cucumber and cooked carrots sticks in a little tub for them to eat, not too messy and save the yoghurts for home.

Thanks - I do give her bread, cucumber etc when out or a few pieces of pasta but not spag Bol or saucy meals that I give her and the other kids at home.

Have a look at page 18 on this document. There is specific guidance for developed countries (as opposed to for all countries) and 6-8m in the UK need 130kcals of complementary foods on top of bfing on baby's cues. So having 6-7 feeds a day isn't excessive in my book (my 3 were having 8-12 feeds until they were at least 12m old!)

Hi there. I'm so glad I found this post as I was about to post the same.

I was concerned my dd (7 months too) is drinking far too much milk despite a really concerted effort with the solids. We are doing blw too, mostly because she refuses anything on a spoon.

She has 7oz as soon as she wakes up, will gum on some fruit or pieces of cereal/toast for breakfast then demand another 7oz, sometimes only an hour or so after her first bottle. She will not go down for her first nap without it. She then goes 3 hours between feeds during the rest of the day with two other meals and snacks, but clusters the last two bottles of the day quite close together and has to have milk before she goes to sleep. She averages 35-40 oz a day which I think is oretty extreme although she is a big girl.

I'd love to drop the amount of milk down but I don't know what else I can do.

Milk has more micro nutrients per calorie than most other foods so it should not be limited or reduced in the first year unless baby just wants less of their own accord. Good book on the subject here
