How do I get 10 MO to start using spoon to feed herself?

hi everyone,
My 10 mo dd used to like putting the heaped spoon in her mouth using her own hand when she started weaning. However, in the last month she just chews the spoon and throws it on the floor. She refuses to use it for actually putting food in her mouth. I'm confused, and am not sure how to get her interested in using it to feed herself again. She loves feeding herself with finger food (and throws this too ;)) That's fine, but I guess I should be persisting with getting her to use the spoon herself. Any tips?
Thanks!

I'm amazed that she can put a loaded spoon of food in her mouth at 10 months. I wouldn't worry about it as long as she's interested in eating and wants to do it herself you're on the right track. By all means give her a spoon and let her watch you using cutlery and then enjoy mealtimes! (By the way, gravity games with food or anything else are great fun when you're learning about the world!)

I'm also amazed she can get it anywhere near her mouth - my DD loved to smear pureé everywhere and absolutely loved to drop drop and drop again anything I put on her tray.

I'm afraid your DD will need help to feed her for a while yet. I found putting peas on my DDs tray and letting her pick them up was good, and also giving her a little plastic spoon for herself was good practice, but I did the majority of the trowel work!

In fact I was still spoon feeding until she was about 14 months: she got more independence as she got more and more teeth. "I do myself" is a lovely sentence, but it doesn't happen overnight.

Take some photos of her face tasting new flavours - some of the faces they pull are classic, and well worth capturing!

my 2 liked using little forks before they got the hang of spoons. They like stabbing the food and it made it easier to get to their mouth

Yes we used a fork here first! Breakfast was the only meal requiring a spoon so we fed DS.

DD is 2.1 and has only really just mastered the spoon, until now her hands have served her well instead!

thanks for the advice. Maybe it was just luck when she used to put the loaded spoon in a while ago, although she did it quite a few times. will try the fork too as she is quite independent and likes controlling her feeding.
:)
