Do i just give cows milk fom 12 months? (FF DD)

Thats it really.

DD is 10 months, ff, still on 3 bottles a day (18 - 20oz) and eats like a horse.

HV says that as of 12 months i completely stop formula and put full fat cows milk in bottles instead. This was after a lecture about her having 3 bottles still, apparently she should be on 2 now but im a bit of a faffy parent and will let DD tell me when shes ready to drop them

Whats the 1+ formula for then??

It's to make money for the milk companies.

Full fat cows milk is fine from 12m for a FF baby, preferably working towards having it from a beaker/cup rather than a bottle.

Formula companies needed to still make money from us when LOs stop needing fomula and can move onto cows milk so they produced the follow on milks. Your LO will get all the things she needs from cows milk and a balanced diet. Don't worry about 3 feeds - DD still has 3 feeds at nearly 13months and shows no signs of stopping. She gets too thirsty otherwise and I have no issue with it. I can remember having a glass of milk after every meal at 4 and 5yo and its better for her than juice etc.

Hijacking thread (sorry) to ask this - why full fat cow's milk? Also, I live overseas and fresh milk can be unreliable. Is UHT ok, or would sticking with formula be better?

Thanks!

MoaningMinnieRisesAgain · 02/05/2012 18:39

I can't see why UHT wouldn't be ok, I gave it to my toddler when we were on holiday somewhere without fresh milk.

Bear in mind that cow's milk in itself is not essential - lots of people don't have any milk at all - you do need a good source of calcium and fat soluble vitamins, plus fluids, and cows milk is a handy way to kill 2 birds with one stone.

Water plus a good varied diet with careful intake of other calcium rich foods would also be fine.

Thanks!

Agree, UHT is fine Smile.
