Constipation...Sorry, I know it's been done!!

DS2 is constipated. He's 5 (and a bit) months and we've been giving him fruit and vegetable purees to try before moving on to a more BLW approach in a few weeks.

Anyway... he's constipated. We've managed to get him going (if you catch my drift!) with a combination of prune/pear purees and cycling his legs but what should we give him (or avoid giving him!) to prevent it happening again? We're attempting to get sips of water into him after his food but he doesn't take much.

He's breastfed, other than the purees. Thanks!

Hi. My top tip would be not to give banana unless very, very ripe ie skin covered in black spots. Banana is a real culprit for constipation.

My LO has just been through same thing. Try giving cooled boiled water/ water and diluted fruit juice with every solid meal you give. Breastmilk is a meal in itself so your DS didn't need anything else but once you introduce solids it throws the balance off and you need something to counterbalance the solids. Every baby is different so let your DS tell you how much liquid he needs.

Thanks both. I've heard that about banana: he had it a while ago and has "been" since, but I'm not offering it again until I'm happy that he's regular. Have been trying to get water into him, but with limited success from either bottle or cup. Haven't tried diluted juice though. Will give that a go. Thanks!

Don't agree with giving a bf baby juice at all sorry. If he's constipated then offer him more bfs as this will help to ease things.

If you are unsure at all talk to a BFC on one of the helplines, like the National Breastfeeding Helpine or post your query in the breast & bottle feeding section Smile
