7mo producing stacks of poo and very little wee - what am I doing wrong?

Hi all

I have a 7mo DS who is now on 3 meals a day. He has started producing lots of poo (4 big poos a day - some solid, some very runny) but doesn't have many heavy nappies any more. We are still bf and I offer bm at 7:30, 11, 3 and at bedtime (sometimes he refuses a feed but not always). When he is eating solids, I give him water from a sippy cup - he does take it but lets at least some of the water dribble out.

He eats a range of food - yoghurt and fruit for breakfast, and a combination of meat, cheese and veg for lunch and dinner. He likes fingers of buttered toast and things like sweet potato, parsnip and swede.

I have been making things from the AK book and sometimes he has some of the Ella's Kitchen sachets. I'm wondering whether I am giving him too much veg and should increase the meat / cheese etc?

He does not yet have teeth. A friend said that teething can give babies runny poos. Therefore is this normal?

He is very perky and happy so I think that he should not be dehydrated (I hope).

I'd be grateful for any responses. We have some people staying with us so probably can't stay on MN too long Blush but I will come back to the thread tomorrow.

Thanks!

If you are worried I would say offer him more water throughout the day and perhaps more watery food like thinly sliced cucumber and melon etc. although not too much, could give more runny poo Blush.

I have zilch experience on weaning but DD is due to start in a few weeks so have been reading A LOT to get prepared. Firstly, everything I have read is different which tells me there is no right or wrong way to do it, just guidance and it's trial and error to see what works for your baby. One thing that did seem to be consistant is that you should keep giving them their usual amount of milk until they are 9 months old. I read that on a few websites (can't remember which!!) but again it's each to their own. So in theory giving them milk five times a day, if they want it of course. Why don't you try adding in an extra feed, so maybe another at 5pm or reducing the time between them. He may not need it at all of course but if it were me I would try and see what the difference was.

Also re the sippy cup, why don't you try another type and see if he has more luck.

If he's producing 4 dirty nappies it's quite likely they were also wet? It sounds to me like he's getting plenty of fluid and a good range of foods.

Teething can cause runny nappies because of the saliva (and often snot) produced getting swallowed and coming out in their nappies.

TBH he sounds fine. Re extra fluid, maybe offer him water using a formula bottle if you're really worried.
