they say foods for fun until your one but my 6 and a half month old will eat a whole banana or a whole avacado etc. with each meal which is 2 or 3 times a day. i breastfeed or formula feed(starting to switch to formula) before each meal and i went out a lot the past 2 days and didnt have time to feed her solids and thought it didnt matter much because of the food for fun rule but she woke up multiple times at night hungry, then yesterday i gave her her usual meals and she only woke up once at 3am anyone else have the same situation?

If you replace all the milk calories with fruit, then the nutrient mix would not really be ideal for the baby. Banana's are very rich in carbohydrates and have little else, 6.5mo babies don't need an awful lot of carbohydrates, they need more fat and protein. Avocados do contain a lot of fat, but still very short of protein. So the problem with switching feeds from BM/formula to these is the balance of nutrition the baby gets is not really great for their growth.

Of course it's all a rule of thumb, and babies have been shown in studies to prefer foods which provide them what they need - on a sort of gross level. So it could be that the foods are right and your DD is regulating nicely.

It's very unlikely that having milk instead of a banana or avocado will have made her wake up from hunger, milk is quite a bit more calorific than a banana, and about the same as avocado.

I would be wary of giving her a whole avocado multiple times a day, she will be needing less than 1000 calories a day, and three avocados could even be that entire need even without the mix, but as all fat and no protein it won't help her build her body.

Yes I wouldn't stop her eating more of the avocado or banana, but if you're offering it at every meal, then that isn't a balanced diet (or even a balanced meal)

I would offer what you're eating at each meal - I assume you're not sitting down to a meal of avocado, or nothing but banana when DD is eating?

Non meat sources of protein are lentil/pulses, Dairy, Eggs, Nuts. But I'd think in simply smaller portions of meals that you eat, rather than giving individual foods.

i want to do that but i get so nervous with things like meat im scared a chunk will tear off and she will choke

Have you looked on the BLW site for ideas, and have you familiarised yourself with how to deal with choking? It's rare, so don't worry too much, and remember that babies are able to gag/choke on purée so there shouldn't be any more risk.

Just give DD what you have - that's the point of BLW! Eggs and pulses also have protein in.

Bananas can have a very constipation effect too, so beware giving them too often!
