11-12 month....how and when to stop formula?

My Lo is 11mo, and i am starting to think about when he hits the magic 12mo!!

I just wanted to find out what other parent have done or are doing?

My DS currently gets his bottles 7.15 am 2.30pm and bedtime at 6.45ish.
The afternoon one is in a cup rather than a bottle.

My plan is to give him his breaky at 7.15 instead (so that he can be getting his breaky at home on the days that he's in nursery) and give him milk with his morning snack. Did anyone just go straight to cows milk without any big problems or did you reduce gradually i.e half and half with cows milk for a couple of weeks?

my 2 only had two milk feeds by 11 months and we did the switch one feed at a time e.g. made the am feed cows milk while leaving the pm one as formula. After a week or so the pm feed was switched to cows milk too. Why not try him with cows milk in his cup at the 2.30pm feed and see how he likes he?

cheekyginger · 24/03/2012 20:56

That makes sense. His 2.30 feed is his smallest bottle, so does make sense to change that one first. Sure he'll like it as he sucks the milk out of his bitesize shredded wheat in the morning Grin

He's 11mo tomorrow, so here goes!!

We tried cows milk at about 11.5months, but didn't like taste, so did mix for a few days. Also (and still true at 21mo) won't drink from fridge.

Just see what happens/if he likes it!

I shall be watching this thread, my dd is also 11 months old today! I have tried giving her cows milk but she's not that keen, so yes will try and mix it in over time.

cheekyginger · 25/03/2012 21:23

Geez the clocks going forward fairly put a spanner in the works. Pretty much missed his afternoon bottle.

Ah well, start with the cows milk tomorrow!

It only took us a few days of mixing to get from formula to cows milk btw.

anthonytrollopesrevenge · 26/03/2012 20:57

I was going to swap gradually with my pfb, but it was so obvious that he preferred cows milk to formula that I gave up formula almost immediately as he wouldn't drink it!

cheekyginger · 28/03/2012 22:06

Ive been giving him cows milk along with his afternoon snack. Loved it.

We are out and about a few days a week. Do you take your own with you or would cafe/restuaraunts give you some blue millk? Seems a bit of a palava carting blue milk about with me!!!

I would take juice, but i think most places would give it to you. I used to work in a Costa and we did.

cheekyginger · 01/04/2012 15:12

Thanks penguins,

He really only has water or milk so im trying avoid giving him juice for as long as possible as i dont want him to go off water.

I've had a bout of D and V and the wee man seems to have dodged the full whack. But it has knocked us out of synch. He's been off his food last couple of days so formula has been a bit of a life saver to be honest.

Hi just thought i would put a wee update.

My DS decided pretty much himself he was going to stop his afternoon bottle. Will now take water or milk whichever is handy.
He then decided the morning bottle was going and started leaving about half of it when he was about 11.5 mo. He is now on one bottle of formula a day of 7oz at bedtime. He's 12mo now but im continuing this till we are back from our holiday as he will be getting formula there as im not sure about the milk situation in Turkey. Once we are back i will change to cows milk in a bottle then change this onto a sippy cup.
Jeez us mums dont half question everything we do!!!!!

Thanks for the interesting post cheekyginger - I'm now hijacking your thread!!! My little one is 11 months old now so guess I should start mixing cows milk with formula yeah?

My little one loves her milk... is it best to drop the pm first? She has 150ml when she wakes (6:30am) then 150ml at 3pm then 200ml at bed.

If I drop the afternoon one and replace with a snack what type of thing is best for energy? Yoghurt, small cheese, banana? Is this alongside cow's milk or instead of? I'm conscious of not overfeeding as my DD is a big girl!

And a final question - what type of cup is best for milk in day - I bought a lidded beaker but she got really angry when wanting her pm bottle.

Thank you!

Jane

Just swap, it's not a big deal if they have been using cows milk with cereal etc.n two DDs no issue with either.

Dottymcdot · 03/05/2012 23:11

Oh those cheapie tommee tippee cups with spouts that go up are good, was not so great at swapping to using a cup, DD2 only just done it, she's 2.8....ooops

cheekyginger · 23/05/2012 21:12

Hi Dottymcdot
Got back from our hols and gave him cows milk in his bedtime bottle. Bosh. Didnt have to faff about mixing anything.

Hi Janethommo,
My DS dropped his feeds by himself. Just started taking less and less of his afternoon milk. So i stopped it and just gave him water with his afternoon snack. My wee man is a bottomless pitt at the moment. His snack options are fruit, pancakes with peanut butter/jam, toast and banana, organix goodies oat bars (bit pricey but really handy when out and about all day), raisins, yoghurt covered raisins!!!!
I use the tommee tippee beaker cup with the fold up spout that Dotty mentioned.
