9-12m little weight gain

My 12m DS has just seen the paed and he's basically gained no weight since 9mo. She wants to see him in two months and if still no change he'll undergo a barrage of tests for allergies etc.

He was born 7 weeks premature at 2kg but then gained incredibly well on breast milk to reach 8.2kg at 6 months. He's been at 9.1kg from 7 months onwards, but has grown in length well and is very actively crawling. He's developing well, very alert etc.

He eats finger foods for breakfast and lunch (fruit is a big hit, avocado, bread etc, always finish lunch with a yoghurt) and I spoon him his tea (mushed up sauces with meat or fish). Snacks usually include biscuits or cake. I offer water when he eats. He doesn't eat a lot by himself (easily distracted) but I decided not to stress, let him bf when he wants, but then insist on one spooned meal a day. Tea can vary - sometimes he'll eat 3 ice cube portions with fruit compote afterwards, somtimes (like this evening, 3 teaspoons then refusal!!!)

I guess I think he isn't eating enough and am asking for advice or people with similar experiences as I'm quite worried.

Hi,
My dd is 2.1 years and weighs only 10kg. Like your ds she gained no weight for almost 8 months.

Our doctor was getting concerned and recommened pedi sure to build her up. This she point blank refused to take. She was ebf until 15 mnths and ate reasonably well.

Were we scheduled for test, a bone X-ray and bloods on her second birthday if her weight didn't improve.

However looking at her she is perfectly fine, very active, cheeky, full of energy etc.

Her diet now isnt very good, not through my lack of trying. She just doesn't seem interested in food. Some days she will eat, others she won't.

Took her back last week for her 2 year check, like I said she weighs only 10kg but the important thing is she is known the chart all be it the 3rd percentile. All test have been shelved as the doctor is happy that therre is weight gain.

Just to add she was born at term weighing 5lb 14oz

I think some children are just small, I hope like my dd your son will suddenly start gaining soon.

Just to add. Was told to offer snacks throughout the day, or offer 5 smaller meals instead of three.

Thanks barbie for your posts. Such a worry isn't it? I promised myself I wouldn't stress about food with DS...and here i am stressing.

With the lack of other symptoms, my gut instinct is he isn't getting enough calories - but I thought he would just drink more if he needed to make up the calories?

DH was tall and very skinny as a child so I wouldn't be surprised if DS is following in his footsteps. The paed offered the opposite advice - don't snack too much and make three proper meals...Confused. BLW on hold for now anyway!

Best of luck with your DD barbie
