Ouch ouch ouch!!!!
After 19 months or in fact 3.5 Years of breastfeefing (stopped dc1 few weeks before birth of dc2). I had become dd's human dummy, still feeding her every two hours a night and throughout the day. Went for 'cold turkey' now or never wean off which she has taken quiet well. Fair bit of crying but she understands that 'boobie is finished'.
But oh my goodness my breasts are so incredibly sore and engorged I want to weep! Not sure why I am posting this...

Ouch!

It hunk this is why is is generally recommended to drop feeds gradually rather than all at once :)

TanteRose · 12/03/2012 07:06

ouch! go and get something nice and cold out of the freezer (packet of peas etc.), wrap in towel and apply.

cabbage leaves work too...

express a tiny bit to make yourself more comfy, but only a TINY amount. Otherwise it will make it worse...it will take a couple of days for them to recover a bit.

I know it is recommended to drop one feed at a time, dd however just suckled without actually drinking most of the time. It had become more a comfort for her (or discomfort to me). I wasn't sure how much milk she actually still has from me, well not as if you ever know that when you bf Wink

I guess she was getting more milk the you thought then :)

A shower may help relieve the pressure. I remember those days...

nutellalover · 12/03/2012 07:21

And thank you Tante (Dankeschön if you are german like your name Grin ) off to the freezer!

Bitte schon! (but I'm not German)

hope you feel better soon Smile

If I were you I'd use a pump to mimic a gradual reduction in feeding.

I think I'd wait until I got engorged, and then pump to a comfortable level, keeping a note of time and quantity. Then wait until you're uncomfortable again, pump to comfort again, make a note etc etc.

If you only pump when you need to, and only take off enough to make you comfortable, I think you'll notice a gradual drop in frequency/volume in your notes. If not, you can start to engineer one, gradually taking less milk off and pumping less regularly.

It'll take a little time, but after feeding for 3.5 yrs, I reckon your boobs have earnt a gentle retirement?!

Thanks for your advice Happy. I have expressed a little this morning and after lunch. Boobs hard as concrete very shortly after again. Strange enough as sometimes she didn't ask for a feed at all during the day.
How many days of concrete like painful boobs can I expect? Confused

Still have incredibly painful engorged breasts after 3 days, how long does it take to settle down? I have expressed a tiny amount every day but also put a very tight spandex top on, cabbage leaves in bra but no changes. It's agonising Sad

You poor thing.

Try reposting this in the breast and Bottle feeding section - maybe TikTok will spot it there and be able to suggest something.

HappyAsASandboy · 17/03/2012 08:09

I'm not sure if you reposted and found some more help but ....

How are you feeling now? I think it's been 6 days since you fed directly, so I really hope you're more comfortable.

Is the engorgement reducing? Are you managing to take less milk off less often and not get too sore?

Hope you're ok nutellalover?

nutellalover · 19/03/2012 06:53

Hallo Happy, thank you for asking!
I have stopped expressing now as the engorgement eased around the fifth day.

Left breast is fine but the right on (which was dd's 'favourite') is very very sore. Not engorged but still harder than normal and very sore nipple Sad. Find it hard at night as we co sleep, dd at times sleeping on my chest when she settles back to sleep (ouch).

Also, milk was very watery when I expressed and dd has starters to eat very well since I weaned her off, so emotionally I feel quite content with having stopped bf.
