it's very tedious! she's 7 months, & i weaned her at 6. she still breastfeeds a lot, & is very good with finger food, chomps away at pretty much anything i give her. but it's a different story with my lovingly prepared mushes, she just yells. i don't think it's the taste she objects to, merely the indignity of being fed.

i reckon we're just going to stick to more & varied finger foods. i've ordered a book, but am just looking for reassurance that she'll get enough to eat feeding herself.

mine refused point blank to be fed anything from 7 mo. he just decided he would do it himself. except yoghurt, the food of the gods.

i am sure she will be fine on varied finger foods if she is still bf.

but keep offering the puree as she might decide to give it a try one day.

btw mine now insists - at 16 mo - on eating with adult cutlery. he is very good at.

Mum2Ela · 30/01/2006 15:11

Yup, mine was the same. Only would ever eat finger food. Its a bit wearing but actually a lot easier when you get to grips with it - I could clean the kitchen and empty dishwasher whilst he was eating! And they will eat enough, don't worry. I know it looks like they have just thrown it all on the floor but they actually need such little food at this age anyway.

DS then went completly the other way at about 11 months and would not eat finger food..

Now at 14 months he mostly insists on using a spoon himself, hes not too bad at it, but will also eat finger foods again.

harpsichordcarrier · 30/01/2006 15:14

abso-bloody-lutely she will get enough
I would hate having a spoon shoved in my mouth too, I'm with your dd
I let dd1 feed herself from the beginning too. the way I look at it, I have many other things to be doing with my hands....

Yep, another spoon refusnik here too. Unless it is yoghurt, when spoons are allowed. You just have to plan family meals carefully so there are lots of chip-shaped items!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/01/2006 15:18

OK, so, what do you do if your LO doesnt like spoons and throws ALL, yes ALL of any finger type food on the floor? Deliberately, and with great ferocity.

Anyone? Ive run out of ideas. Cant be arsed to start my own thread - sorry Hoxtonc!

starlover · 30/01/2006 15:19

have you tried mcdonalds?

fruitful · 30/01/2006 15:21

How old?

Give him milk and keep trying once every few days?

Sit him in the highchair at the table every mealtime and get the rest of the family to make a lot of yum yum noises?

Introduce jam on toast?

hoxtonchick · 30/01/2006 15:30

glad to know mine isn't the only contrary one. she'll be getting her chops round her big brother's birthday cake later....

He is 9mths. I have been struggling for 3 months to get him to eat. He will eat totally smooth pureed food of a particular flavour/content on a good day.

He had started to improve marginally - sucked an orange segment the other day. He's not been well which doesnt help. But, gave him some toast today and he picked it up and very purposefully threw it on the floor - 8 times over. Did the same with orange segments. Totally refused his lunch. Offered him a milk feed and he bit my nipple. Ho hum.

mazzystar · 30/01/2006 16:17

vvv i totally sympathise, i used to slave over a hot stove to make chicken and tarragon ragout and he'd look at me like i was insane to think that he would consider eating it. he lived on yoghurt and bananas for several weeks.

things that helped a bit were all sitting down to eat together and making sure i timed things so he was really truly hungry.

try not to worry

Kelly1978 · 30/01/2006 16:24

one of mine will eat off a spoon,a nd will eat finger food. But if I try to use my fingers to feed him he is totally disgusted. Babies are jsut wierd. Oh and the other one refuses to eat off a spoon from dp. Babies are jsut wierd.

My dd is another of the spoon = devil spawn members. She is 7.5 months now and really not eating very much at all. Finger foods are the only way anything gets near her mouth but it is hard work and most of it goes on the floor. It is rare that she actually swallows something.

I was getting a bit worried about it because she isnt gaining any weight but Im going to keep offering her finger food and the odd spoon in case she decides one day to eat. I have asked around about whether I should reduce her milk to try and induce her to eat but general consensus (health visitors and experienced nannies etc) is not to so that she actually gets something - making her hungrier doesnt seem to make them eat more. Apparently one day she will actually eat.....when she is ready!

Its hard to try and keep it fun 3 times a day. Especially when all the other babies I know are wolfing down huge portions....

Its great to know there are others out there!
