help dd leaving half her bottles!

me23 · 19/01/2006 10:29

dd is 7.5 months I've been weaning her since 6 months. The problem is I'm stuck in a rut with this weaning buisness I don't know how to move forward.
can someone please give me a routine to follow?
currently dd is refusing about half of every bottle so she barly has 500mls a day, this is what she has in a day.
6-8am (it varies when she wakes) 6oz bottle she leaves 2 or 3 oz.
11 6oz bottle drinks about 3oz(varie)
2pm-savoury mashed veg eg half a jar followed by half fruit.
3-30 6 oz bottle doesnt drink all of it probably half
4.30 yogurt
6-30 6oz bottle
10.30 40z bottle (dreamfeed)
I'm aware that i need to change this routine basically it is the same as before weaning obv without the food. I know I need to cut out some bottles but I really don't know what ones or what times to feed her. also I should probably introduce another meal but I don't know when I've tried giving her breakfast she wasn't interested.
please help I don't have a clue what times to feed her and when to give bottles! I was fine before weaning.
what to you do?
thanks in advance

Hi me23. Not sure how helpful I can be but just wanted to let you know my ds is 6.5 months and have been weaning for about 3 weeks now...He is drinking about the same as your dd and the times are almost the same as well. I make 6 oz bottles and he drinks 3oz approx (5 bottles a day). I have introduced breakfast, lunch and tea which does seem to be going down well.
7am approx - milk
9am approx - baby rice with fruit puree
11am - milk (am dropping this as of today)
1pm - veg puree (approx 3 icecubes or half jar)
3pm - milk
5pm - mashed banana/greek yoghurt or fruit puree & baby rice.
6.30pm - milk
10.15pm - milk (hoping to drop this one soon once he is eating meat/fish)
As of today, I have cut out 11am bottle as it is the one he least wants. My DS has never been overly fond of milk and seems happier on solids. Sometimes this routine goes a bit pear shaped if he naps for too long. Good luck - it's not an easy transition.

I wouldn't worry too much about the 3rd meal yet. My dd is nearly 10 months and I have only just put her on to a 3rd solid meal. At 7 months she was only drinking 4-5 oz per bottle.

kateandfelicity · 19/01/2006 13:03

Hi, my DD was doing this... I think with her it was because she was wanting to drop a bottle.
if your dd was having 5 full bottles a day AS WELL AS food, that would be a monumental amount of milk!!!
I dropped the 11am bottle, this instantly meant she had more of her other ones.
she also refused to have more than 2oz milk at nursery so i dropped the 10pm bottle and she now has 3 full bottles a day (8.5months old)as ell as 3 meals a day.
-so my suggestion is to try dropping the 11 am bottle and offer some water instead if she is thirsty?
hope that helps.

kateandfelicity · 19/01/2006 13:05

yeah drop 11am bottle first... and at 11/11.30 give dd 'lunch' and water to drink...
then at 2.30 ish try giving her a bottle then.
then some time around 4.30/5pm i would suggest trying to give her some dinner again with water.
then bath time and bedtime bottle, carry on with the night feed and then wait to see what she wants to do with that.

weird i added a message and its disappeared! thanks for all the advice girls as of tomorrow i will drop 11am feed and i will also try dinner tomorrow will post on how it goes!

I've dropped the 11am feed, yesterday i had a course to go to and left dd in the creche so I'm not too sure how she coped without it, she seemed happy at 1 when i picked her up though.
fed her at 3 she had all of it 6oz then 4.30 gave milk i cant actually remeber how much she had tho (oops) fed her at 11.00 pm she had about 5 oz and she slept through till 9am I cant believe it! fingers crossed her sleeping will get better!
today she had all her morning bottle 6 oz, all her 2.30 bottle 6 oz
but only 80mls of her bedtime bottle!
hopefully she will drink most of her 10.30 bottle to make up her intake.
I['m confused about how much milk she is supposed to be getting. I've read 500mls but elsewhere I've read 21 oz, does anyone know?
because accrding to dd intake today she's had 480 mls, but only 14-15 oz.

she should be having around 18-20oz a day.
but this includes dairy products in food (ie on her breakfast, yoghurt, cheese etc etc)

me23 · 21/01/2006 21:45

thanks I didnt realise yoghurt counted. how many ounces is one petit filou? 60g sorry dont know the conversion.

I think u r giving too many bottles. A baby of her age needs 17-20oz of milk a day, thats approx 3 bottles of 7oz a day.

My dd's routine is:
7am - 7oz bottle (and sometimes cereal with formula, depending on how hungry she is)
11:30am - Lunch: veg, stew, fruit, etc
2:30pm - 7oz bottle
5pm - Tea: rusk in formula, fruit puree, cheesey toast etc
6:30pm - 7oz bottle
7pm - Bed

My dd is just 8 months and I've been following this routine for a while now. She sometimes leaves an ounce or 2 in the bottle but if u give cereal with formula or rusk with formula as one meal it's a bit of a top up.
Hope this helps.

me23 - going through a very similar transition with my ds (same age as your dd, weaning since 6 months). Trial and error to see what suits him seems to be turning out a routine very similar to Sadeyed.

me23 · 22/01/2006 22:20

the last 3 days i've left the 11am bottle out. this morning she had 6 oz at 9am
1.pm solids
2.45pm offered 6 oz (200mls) bottle she only had 80mls
4.30 2 petit filous
6.30 60z bottle only had 4 0z 140 mls.
so only 13 oz today hopefully she will take more at her 10.30pm feed.
does anyone know how many ounces the two petit filous count as?

Don't think yougurt counts as oz of milk, it's just dairy. A baby needs the set daily ammount of formula because of all the vitamins, nutriants and iron that's in it. The Practical Parenting book of weaning says:

"A 6-9 month old baby needs 500-600ml (17-20 fl oz) of breast milk, formula or follow-on milk, plus small amounts of wholemilk in cooking or breakfast cereals."

If I were you I would focus on the milk for a while without offering yogurt as this will be filling her up but with the wrong things, they are full of sugar and preservatives but have no minerals, iron and few vitamins.

me23 · 23/01/2006 14:27

thanks for the advice, she was fine before weaning she would drink 30 oz a day.
I will cut out the yoghurt then it's just someone said it counted towards the allowance. I will try adding baby rice to her fruit puree to get more formula into her.
btw at her 10.30 feed she had 5oz so totalled 18 oz yesterday so am relieved about that
