dd is 6mo and has been having solids since 20 wks, she currently has a bit of breakfast after her morning milk and we have tea at 5pm which is 3 cubes of something and about 2-3oz of water but then when it comes to her bottle at bedtime usually around 6.30/7 she will only take 5oz but then wakes up a few times between then and her night feed. i think she may be more content if she took a full 7/8oz so im wondering am i giving her too much water or solid?? should i give milk split feed at 5 with solids then milk at usual bedtime?? i find the whole balance thing confusing!

At 6mo it is perfectly normal for a baby to wake up.

She will take what she needs to take milk-wise. Have you had a look at sleep regressions - they happen every 6 weeks or so and are linked to development and can cause havoc with sleep for a week or two!

I don't see it would make a difference if you give her more milk and less solid food, or less milk and more solid food - she'll still be full when she's full IYSWIM?

Personally, I never bothered with the offering milk an hour before/after a meal, or with splitting feeds and meals. DD had her milk at her usual times, and ate her meals whenever we ate. She took as much milk as she needed to, and ate as much normal food as she needed to. No need to worry about balance - until she's 1 the main content of her diet should be milk, gradually reducing in quantity and you should follow your DD's lead as to how much milk she wants :)

Hi er1507,

I had the same issue with my DS with his bedtime bottle. He is 9mo and enjoying his food alot but i found if he had his dinner anytime between 5 and 5.30 (which takes about 30-40 mins with a mix of finger food and spoon feeding) then he wouldnt take all his bedtime bottle at 6.30. We've changed his dinner to 4.30 and now for the past week he fihishes his 8oz bottle and has a more settled night.

Each to their own but i think that last bottle does make a difference to how well my LO sleeps. His dinner time can just gradually become later as he gets older.

Wouldnt change the quantity of your LO's solids but you could alter the timing?
