Nursery feeds them 5 times a day!

Dd is just 1 and has just started nursery 2 days a week. There they have breakfast at 8.30, snack at 10.30, lunch at 11.30, dinner at 3.30 and snack at 5. Blimey! Is this normal? Will she expect this on the days she is with me?

Yes that's what they do in my DD nursery. I get a sheet every day and I know DF doesn't eat the morning snack. At home I do try to mimic the meal time of nursery. Is yours eating all 5 meals.

Francagoestohollywood · 08/01/2012 11:32

I think it is pretty normal, in that (ime) the portions tend to be very small and some small children like to have something to eat every couple of hrs.
In the nursery attended by my children they had: breakfast (piece of toast) a snack of fruit mid morning, lunch and dinner at around 4 ish.

It's normal at DD's nursery and I'd say it was a normal eating pattern for most one year olds. When DD1 was that age, I was advised to give small meals and plenty of snacks. I'll do the same for DD2.

When does your DD usually eat? If she's not hungry at nursery, she can just skip a meal or snack.

At home she has breakfast about 9, lunch about 12.30 and dinner about 4.30 with snacks (rice cakes, fruit). But all much more informally.

She's only done settling in week and she ate everything with gusto apparently.

My DS manages to fit in a breakfast before we leave in the morning, breakfast, morning snack, lunch (11:30) and tea (3:30) at nursery, then a snack when we get home around 5. When we're at home he still has a morning snack, lunch about midday, but then a snack about half 3 and dinner at 5.

DD (nearly one) has breakfast at home, snack, lunch, afternoon snack/tea at nursery and a snack/tea at home. The days she is not at nursery I tend to give a bigger breakfast later in the morning, a big lunch and just one daytime snack.

yellowflowers · 08/01/2012 20:55

That is good idea I will try to see snack and dinner as interchangeable.

Surely most under 4s eat 5 times a day?

nextphase · 08/01/2012 20:59

From what I've seen, nursery meals can be pretty small - certainly my LO can eat seconds and sometimes thirds, so they can't be serving up that much (or he's a pig!)

Yes, that's normal IME.

Nursery portions are small though. And they run / crawl around and burn it all off.
