I've just meade these for the first time. Are they meant to be squidgy soft? or a bit harder?

I've made that recipe a couple of times and found that I got a better result if I used two eggs rather than one. Seems to help it all to bind together better and give it a more cakey consistency. But I also think it might depend on how much water you cook the lentils in, as I used more than was stated in the recipe cos they were drying out. Also found it helps to let the cake tin cool before cutting into wedges, instead of being impatient and doing it too early like I did! HTH
