Starting BLW & question about poo/constipation

Started BLW a few days ago. DS very nearly six months and showing all signs of readiness. Mainly had sticks of pear, cucumber, mango etc so far, plus he's spooned some porridge in (we were quite impressed with his abilities with a loaded spoon!).

Most food ended up on floor but think some went in. DH changed the last nappy and said it was a bit different than usual. Trouble is his last nappy was on Monday and now we're a little worried that he may be constipated.

He's been EBF till now and would often go several days between poos - even a whole week on one occasion. From what I understand this is pretty normal for EBF babies.... But i'm not sure what to expect now we've started BLW and he's been straining a bit today.
Anyone else had an infrequent pooer on bm - how did that change with weaning? Should we be worried?

Thanks in advance

Did have an infrequent pooer, her record was 12 days, and that did change with weaning (including the smell!).

Think that unless he is showing signs of pain or his poo comes out hard it is nothing to worry about.

If you want to help him poo when he is straining you could try feeding him, or no nappy time, a bath or baby massage on his tummy. All of these things might help to get a result Xmas Smile.

His poo will change - what comes out changes as what goes in changes, so tell DH not to worry.

The frequency of DDs poos changed too once we started BLW, she's gone every couple of days rather than daily (apart from when she had toddler diarrhoea and we hadn't got it under control!)

You could offer water as well as the BM now that he's weaning, that might help (don't know for sure as I had a FF baby) - keep a lidded beaker out all the time so that he can help himself as and when he wants to. A bit of prune juice can help too if he does get clogged up.

As fliss says, water should be offered with food but as he is so young, I'd still be offering the bm at other times. The BM will help him poo too.

Thanks - puts our minds at ease. We'll continue to let him shovel pear in and await the results!

It will change once they started to really tuck into the solids. At first I see lumps of recognisable food. Slowly the poo become more and more like soft serve and you can't see lumps of carrots or broccoli anymore. DD also went from pooing every few days to 2-3 times a day and very very smelly. The worst was when she started really getting into it. I remember changing a dirty nappy every 2-3 hours!

Enjoy the BM poo while you can Grin
