does this mean ds is not ready? He is 21 weeks and seems very keen and interested. He sucks and chews on sticks of melon and cucumber but when I steamed some melon and mashed he pushed it out of his mouth, though he seemed keen to be fed it, iyswim.

Yes it's the tongue thrust reflex. Just wait for another week and try again? Have a look at the NHS page on weaning. If he's keen and have the first two signs, ie sitting unaided and can aim food at his mouth, then just let him play with some finger food for the time being. That would give him some distraction until he's ready.

Thank you, I am not on a particular hurry. He is keen to keep up with his brother! I'll do as you suggest for a bit longer.

Leave it for another few weeks. There's no rush.

I would say he has not lost his tongue thrust reflex and would hold on for a few more weeks. Does he show the other signs of readiness, can he sit up?

Yes, sits up quite well though a bit wobbly. All other signs there and will feed himself finger foods.
