Hi,

Not really worried about my DS, but just wondering about the milk/food balance.

I do know "food is for fun until they are one" and all that chat. But he seems to be way over the "recommended" amount of formula for his age (18-21oz). He is weaning and having 3 small meals a day a mix of BLW and mash.

Do babies really start reducing the amount of milk they take themselves or should i reduce one of his feeds?

His current routine is

7.15 Bottle 8oz
8.15 breaky

11.30 Bottle 8oz
12.30 - 1 ish Lunch
3.30 Bottle 7oz
5.30 Dinner
6.45 Bottle 8oz /bed

He drains most of his bottles....but his portions of solids are small. Just going with the flow at the mo, so any suggestions?

That doesn't sound too much. My 7.5 mo probably has about that amount of milk (hard to tell as mainly bf) and has reasonable size 'meals' 3 times a day. He is big for his age but not overweight - he's always been top of the percentile chart. If he's draining his bottles and you're not 'encouraging' him to finish them, then it sounds like he needs them. I'm sure as he starts eating more solids his appetite for milk will reduce, but I wouldn't start dropping feeds if it seems like he still needs it. I always find it kinda weird anyway that the advice is always given as how much milk a baby needs by age, but surely must depend a lot on how big they are for their age - having a 95%ile-er I tend to just ignore that advice and go with what he wants Wink

Thanks for that. He actually had less milk today......sometimes asking a question on mumsnet makes it happen!!! Now he will actually hav some space for the food he's playing with/eating Smile
