ive started weaning my dd for the past week or so. started giving her baby rice and the morning and afternoon followed by her bottle. Recently shes started waking through the night, do i give her any solids before she goes to bed? i cant remember whether you can or not...

I dont think shes teething yet, so i dont know if thats the reason for her waking. Shes 23 weeks.

Formula is higher-calorie than baby rice, so I'd give more formula if she seems hungry.

blondie82 · 05/01/2006 08:57

does it matter that shes already on 9oz already?

I'm not great on what amounts babies are supposed to have, never really used formula.

Sometimes they do just wake. I know my kids still needed feeding in the middle of the night at 23 weeks.

Baby rice isn't exactly full of calories and nutrients. And it can be hard on the gut - can cause constipation etc. It could be the change in diet has upset her a bit?

i was given advice by HV to give DS solids near bedtime along with bottle and it seemed to work but there is sooo much conflicting advice out there even from health professionals!

i know cathyspam, i cant remember whether my hv said to not give solids before bedtime. i give her things like yogurt too and pureed veg. i wonder if it is the change in diet notquitecockney, because she usually does sleep through the night usually

I think I agree with NQC - more milk is likely to be better at filling her up than baby rice. Don't worry about giving more than 9 oz at a go. Main reason not to give solids before bed that I can think of is that if they are upsetting her tummy at all, then that will make her even grumpier/more wakeful at night. Given she's 23 weeks, and that you are giving her other solids anyway, I would bin the baby rice.

well shes on sma gold formula at the minute, can you buy stronger formula to fill her up a bit more? or just stay on what shes happy with?

I wouldn't change the formula.

If you feel you really must wean this early, it's probably best to just stick to fruit and veg purees. Yogurt is not really ideal (particularly if sweetened etc). (I guess if it's the kind made with formula it might be ok? Still, quite a processed food.)

ok, i'll keep everything in mind. thanks for all your help

My LO went through a growth spurt where he was drinking 12 oz in one sitting. My HV said that you should give them enough so they leave a little in the bottle or are drinking really slowly by the end. Maybe try offerring milk before baby rice so LO fills up on calories but still gets weaning practice. By the way, when I weaned my LO refused daytime naps for a good week.

My ds has always been hungry in the evening and was willing to knock back more than 9oz much younger than 23 weeks. We ended up splitting the feed: a bottle at 5pm and another at 6.30.
