peas & apricots...

What's the score with peas and apricots for a 6 month old? I gave him peas today - but mushed them through a seive first. Bit of a pain - do you have to do that or can i mush them and give as is? Same with apricots - i cooked some dried apricots and freezed them in cubes. Tested one yesterday and it tasted really bitty - should i have passed them through a seive too?

Depends on your child and what he can cope with. I used to mash rather than blend as much as possible for my dd and she didn't mind, but i know other babies who have not liked the textures until they were quite a bit older.

Try it out and see!

i was going to mash them - as he seems able to cope with it - but i'd heard they can't digest the shells. is that right? he's only just started weaning, so i don't want to over do his system.

Can't remember the rules on when babies are supposed to be able to eat whole peas, but I certainly used to push them through a sieve for ds when he was that little. Bit of a faff though. If I had another one, I'd just leave off the peas until they were older!

ds couldn't digest pea shells until recently (and sometimes he still can't). He's 14mo. I didn't give him peas when he started on solids for that reason, mushed or otherwise.

I stuck to things that weren't too fibrous when he was small (apples, butternut squash, carrots etc).

Several MNers have started on finger foods rather than purees at 6m though - if you search for "baby-led weaning" in the archives you should find something on it.

the thought did cross my mind! mind you, you should have seen the size of the cr8p i found in his nappy afterwards. it was awesome.

sorry tmi! but it was a proud moment. a perfect mr whippy formation, green and immense. i actually realed back in shock as i was expecting the usual play dough number!
