Between 6 and 7 months, what can they have, and how much?

I started weaning DS at around 5.5 months. He is now 6.5 months.

I seem to be lucky on the weaning front as he seems to love food. I started with veg and fruit purees, and now I have just introduced meat and finger foods. Just have a couple of questions - now he is over 6 months, can he basically have whatever we're having, as long as it's without salt? The reason I ask is that the Ellas meat pouches say from 7 months only. I am mostly cooking my own purees, but wondered if there's a reason the pouches are from 7 months...? Also the meat recipes in the GF weaning book are from 7 months (not doing GF routine, just got it for the recipes!).

Also - how much should babies be having at this age? DS still takes all his milk feeds (30-35 oz) a day, and now is on 3 'meals' a day, with a meal consisting of about the equivalent of one of the Ellas pouches. Should I cut back his milk, as he shows now signs of cutting back on his milk and he also eats whatever solids I offer him. I'm a bit worried about over-feeding him - he is already on the 91st centile (although he is long, so in proportion!).

Thanks so much for any advice!

Yes, your baby can have anything you eat apart from whole grapes (choking risk), whole nuts (choking risk) and honey.

BLW babies just dive right in and eat whatever from the start so there's no reason why he can't have the Ella's meat pouches if you want to give him those, it's just that most traditional weaners start off with smooth foods and then move up to textured foods (which is what the 7 month pouches are) after a few weeks.

If he's showing that he wants less milk, then offer less but he might not cut back very much at first (others drop right down to virtually nothing almost straight away) so be guided by him, rather than set amounts :)

I was wondering the same thing with regards to the meat....I presume you can start with any meat/fish? My dd is 6.5months and I started weaning at 5.5months too...I think she's getting fed up of the same fruit and veg! Grin

Any meat/fish is fine (just watch out for fish bones) - cut it into strips and make sure it's well cooked. DD could destroy a piece of beef with her gums at 6mo, it would finish up a lump of grey mess after she'd gummed all of the goodness out of it!

Thanks thought so...we are a purée pair with bits of finger food Wink
