Butternut squash came out exactly like it went in! Normal??

Hi there

Just starting to wean my 26 week old DS. He has had some lactose intolerance issues over the last couple months so I have been advised by a consultant pediatric gastro to just offer baby and rice and veg to start for now (no fruit). Baby rice and potato went well, I just started butternut squash a couple of days ago, I just changed his nappy and his poo looks almost like the butternut squash that went in!! Is this normal or could this be down to his tummy issues?

Thanks!

Sorry, also meant to say, I know there isnt lactose in veg (!) I was just wondering if this type of poo was caused by him having a senstised stomach or whether it is run of the mill to look like that!

I take it you mean there are lumps of squash in his poo? Our 26 week old DS has just started on solids too and I have seen lumps of parsnip and bits of asparagus in his poo this week so I hope it's normal! He has no tummy issues we're aware of. Baby rice and potato are squishier so you wouldn't see their remains in the nappy I suppose.

Gill Rapley in 'Baby Led Weaning' says that pieces of food, usually vegetables, may appear in recognisable lumps in the baby's nappy and this just shows that s/he is learning to chew and his/her body is adapting to solids.

Thanks for this. Very reassuring! It was more like the whole thing looked like butternut squash mashed up rather than lumps! It hasnt happened again. Guess it's just one of those things, yet another learning curve :) x

In my experience too this is normal, it happens to my DC. (As a TMI, it also happens to me with certain foods.)

We had bits of courgette and carrot in the nappy today! Examining baby poo under a lamp, my new hobby.

Hee hee hee - we had this too! The best one was when ds was hoovering up strips of roasted red pepper and then strips of red pepper came out the other end the next morning. It's got 'better' as he's got a bit bigger, but some meals are still almost recognisable. Hope it's not a problem! We've always assumed it is normal.

I have had exactly the 'in-out' with little change when giving butternut squash or carrot to my little boy. I think it is probably fine!
