Weaning Products??

Looking to start weaning my first at 4 months and therefore am going to be buying weaning products. Please can you give me any recommendations on the best brand/shop to buy from...?? thanks

He is already at full bottles at all feeds, i have put him on hungry milk formula, sucking his hand after bottles. He is ready now but I am waiting until he is 4 months due to health.

how often is he feeding and how much milk?

sucking his hands is only a sign of being a baby who likes sucking stuff.

Have you spoken to your HV about starting to wean so early? They can look at the amount / frequency of milk and see if there is anything you can tweek there. Also 4 months is the first regression so he'll start sleeping a lot less which can be a shock and can make you think you need to change something when actually there is nothing you can really do apart from ride it out.

If you wait long enough, you shouldn't need any specialist weaning products to be honest. There is no reason why babies have to have baby rice, special porridge or jars of puree.

Wait to 6 months, then just give him whatever you are having.

The only specialist weaning product you need is food. Just ordinary, unsalty food. And no honey or soft eggs until 12 months.

on a practical note, I found small tubs with lids much better for freezing, heating and serving tiny amounts of puree than the extra large ice cube trays. I weaned my son at 5 and half months as he was very hungry. Do seek medical advice before weaning early, there are many reasons to wait until six months, I'm sure lots of MNers will enlighten you soon!

HV has said once at full bottles I have nowhere to go but to solids but to try and wait until 4 months which is what I am doing.....now can anyone tell me what weaning products are recommended....ie tommee tippee etc, flexible freezing trays??? Also I don't know anyone that has waited until 6 months to wean....

well i don't think that anyone on here will advise you on how to wean your baby early tbh.

how often does he have his feeds? it might just be that he needs them more frequently?

is he unhappy between feeds? if not then i don't understand why you feel he needs anything more?

Below 6m all he can have is pureed fruit and veg - no dairy, no wheat, no meat. There ain't no calories in pureed carrot so how's that going to help?!! Just give more milk.

define 'full bottles' please, as people have asked. how much milk every how often?

your hv sounds like she's not helping you much with options eg more milk.

some wee tubs are handy for the freezer if cooking batches, fancy brands not required.

lots of people wait till 6 months, it's not that odd.

little pots better than flexible trays, soft edge spoons - tommee tippee, Boots, few plastic bowls - ikea, any supermarket - best with lids for travelling, small insulated lunch box and ice pack to transport grub, plastic backed bibs, bibs with a 'ditch' to catch bits - tommee tippee do a roll up one, many many wet wipes.

Avent make 11 oz bottles, although they are generally need to be a special order in shops/www. I bet you've probably got 8oz bottles.

Can't you just give him more feeds?

Why do you need to buy weaning products? Just puree frit/veg!

And offer more bottles till 6 months, how often is he having a full bottle?

Buy an ice cube tray for the purees, then move the cubes to freezer bags. You might want a hand blender to whizz. Obviously some plastic spoons and bowls. You don't need weaning products per se iyswim.

But you can only give non citrus, non berry fruits and root veg. Annabel Karmel has s list in her book. If you want to follow a plan, have a look at her book. She doesnt recommend baby rice either btw.

Quite shocked at some of the replies to this thread. I was under the impression that this was a site dedicated to mums helping other mums especially first timers. Amy is a first time mum and has come to ask for advice and instead she has been slated. Popcorn? Really? This isnt entertainment for you, and your mates joining in just makes you all look like bullys. Amy im really thankful you have gotten some intelligent replies and i really hope that you sort out your issues and dont lose your confidence to come back to a site like this which i suspect you probably have. Not all babies are the same and some are hungrier and do need to be weaned earlier. Good luck.

My HV also told me all the signs to look for when my bf LO was ready, started about 3 weeks ago now (LO is 20 weeks) I got some ice cube trays from Wilkinsons for 99p, tomme tippee spoons, bowls from ikea £1.99 for 3, tiny oval pots and some deep lidded ones from boots and having great fun! I got the AK Book to but TBH it's not exactly full to the brim with ideas, most of the info is on here but if you want the age specific lists etc pm me :)
I also used a kenwood smoothie maker rather than a hand blender, but it's just what I had in the cupboard wasn't a special purchase.

There are a lot of really I'll informed HVs out there that instead of giving proper up to date, evidence based information just tell you any old rubbish that comes into their brains. It isn't fair on parents and it isn't air on informed, good HVs either.

OP, weaning before 6 months should be reserved for very specific medical conditions, like premature babies, on the advice of a paediatrician.

For normal, healthy, full term babies the recommendations is to start solids when the baby shows [[http://www.nhs.uk/start4life/pages/no-rush-to-mush.aspx signs of readiness] for solid food around 6 months.

Chewing fists, not sleeping through the night, or wanting more milk feeds are NOT signs of readiness for solid food.

How often is your baby having a bottle?
