Healthy finger food snacks

cgpmummy · 23/05/2011 22:37

8 month old daughter loves eating finger foods and was looking for any suggestions on snacks.
She loves melba toast, cucumber, small pieces of cheese.
Banana too slippy! Apple/carrot too hard she chokes!

Any ideas?

Thanks

you can grate carrot and apple
raisins
breadsticks
pear (nice and soft and they can gum it)
berries (strawberries, raspberries etc - v messy but they love sucking them to death)

Give her half a banana, not cut into strips or anything, it's much less slippy.

Slices of melon with skin still on - wash the outside first and she'll soon figure out which bits taste nice.

Strips of toasted pitta with hummous, though Ds2 used to just suck the hummous off Grin

Mango is yummy but slippy - again leaving some skin on helps.

Half a ripe pear.

Those Organix rice cakes that come in fruity flavours - yum!

If you take a piece of ripe banana and squeeze and wiggle it a little you can separate it lengthways in three pieces which are not slippery as you have not cut it.Try it and you may be able to work out what i mean!

Any kind of dried fruit or some garden peas - good for developing the pincer grip as well

My DD loves prunes and organix corn sticks carrot flavour.

Hi Guys

Thanks for your ideas.

I was really dubious about giving her raisins/peas for choking reasons but my husband gave her raisins yesterday and she loved them!
I have given her berries and she loves them but she needs stripped off or a complete change afterwards!!
I was thinking about snacks for on the go as well so the raisins and breadsticks and rice cakes sound good.
I will definitely give the mango and melon with skin attached a go - great idea!

Thanks again

We're BLW but some of DD's favourites are

  • avocado mushed on toast
  • dairy lee on toast
  • carrot sticks (briefly boiled to soft enough to eat but not too slippery)
  • berries
  • mango
  • omelete (with anything in, normally the vegs she didn't eat earlier) - I make it nice and thick and cut it into fingers
