Will weaning with bananas cause constipation

Just wondered because am tempted, when I get there, to wean first off on bananas as I eat one every day and when DS smells it, and ocassionally licks it, he goes bananas with excitement himself! Anyone had any problems with them? DS already seems to be a relatively sensitive pooer so am keen to avoid anything that might encourage any additional hassle. I was thinking of mashing it up with BM and maybe a bit of baby rice depending on consistency. Either that or pears I think...

Is a banana not a fibre ?

Therefore helpful in all things down below?

Bananas can constipate them. Pears are better to start with apparently.

Pear might be easier on his digestive system. Banana tends to reappear at the other end in a vile manner and stains! Root veg like carrot and parsnip are good first foods too.

not really, dd loved banana purees, she only ate it for good while. never had problem, but some people said its makes constipate.
i assume, babies r different.

Careful to get all the stalky bits out of parsnip though if it is a v early food. Stewed apples are good too.

i think it depends on each child, my ds has to only have a very tiny bit of banana and he really suffers but i know some babis who have it every day nearly and are fine, pear and carrots are good ones to start on

My dd's first solid food was banana, just mashed up with a fork (you don't need to add bm or baby rice, it's just right as it is). She didn't suffer with consipation from it, but in some babies (and some adults too) it seems to cause constipation.

There's only one way to find out for sure and that's to try it and see how he goes.

Thanks to all.

Kalex you absolutely right, Bananas are full of fibre and relaly that's why I worried as I think babies aren't meant to have too much fibre heavy food, because it fills them up and bulks out their poo, hence constipatin...not 100 per cent though as pears aren't high in fibre too and The Baby Whisperer reccomends weaning on Pears, so I'm stuffed if I know!

Pears (and baby rice) are recommended as first foods because they are the least likely to cause any allergic reactions......according to something I read ??????

snowgirl · 11/11/2005 18:39

I read the same. I started on just pear (not with rice) and dd loved it. She had banana soon after and also loved that. It's also quite good mixed with avocado. Really!
