Am I right in offering milk before solids until 1yr?

A friend of mine said that around 9 monthish she offered breakfast before the morning breastfeed and found that her babies ate more breakfast as a result.

My DD who is 9 months is not interested in breakfast at all (we do BLW) and my friend suggested I do this in order for her to be more interested in it. She said that's what her weaning book said.

I'm confused cos I always thought that milk was more important than solids till 12 months? and my DD would not tolerate me not feeding her and putting her in front of food instead, no way. She still doesn't make the connection between being hungry and solids, and I think she's too young for that anway.

So who is right?

I don't think it matters too much so long as you have a happy, healthy baby who eats food and gets milk.

Guidelines say babes should get majority of their calories from milk before 12mths, and that milk is still more important, but it depends on what you want you LO to do and if/when you plan to wean or cut down on breastfeeds, or if you'd actively like her to continue to bf as much as she is now.

Both my DDs would howl for milk (DD2 still does) regardless of which way round I offered milk/food, and it seems to make almost no difference to how much solid food they eat. Some of my friends' kids, however, had very big appetites and if offered food first would stuff their faces then skip a breastfeed, leading some to wean before 12 months. Which is fine if that's what you're aiming for.

Can I just ask if you want her to eat more for a particular reason, or if you're just curious about guidelines? It helped with DD1, when she was quite a big toddler and still eating very little, to bf her and leave a good half hour before sitting down for a meal.

well I'd like her to go at her own pace really. I go back to work in 4 months time when she will be 13 months, for 3 days a week. So she will have no breastfeeds during the day then. hopefully she will take cows milk from a cup and if not make up for the feeds at other times and the days I am at home. That's my aim.

Ritamorgan - She's not that interested in food and eats very little, but that is not unusual in a BLW baby. Feeds don't drop till they are about one.

I guess it depends on the baby. Some babies love their food from the start and others, like my DD, much rather have milk!

I started doimg milk before food for one meal a day as dc3 wasn't interested in food, this got her eating more. Now she's eating well I'm not really sure what I do!
