DS is 24 weeks and we started (trying) to wean a few days ago. He doesn't seem impressed. He pulls a face at porridge, has tried chewing a carrot stick without much sucess. So I tried mushed carrots and he didn't like that any better. He gags on pretty much everything, quite dramatically. Even the mushed up carrot.

I just don't know if it is the taste he isn't impressed with or whether he just isn't ready. The signs are that he is ready in that he is watching all food with great interest but he doesn't seem to want to take it himself.

What do you think?

If he doesn't seem bothered about taking it for himself I'd leave it a bit tbh. You just risk making yourself/him stressed about it. Ds2 (my most recent experience) was literally grabbing stuff off plates at mealtimes and shoving it in his mouth, so we decided to go for lazy-arsed baby led weaning with him. Much easier than the purees we'd done with ds1.

The gagging is normal, just part of them getting used to having things other than milk in their mouths and learning to swallow. Can look quite dramatic but is v different to choking.

I kept going even sometimes just once a day some cereal, when this happened to me and a week later she was throwing herself on the spoon. I'm leaning more to the cereal and purees and she seems to want to down more than expected but I give her finger foods also.
