Baby led weaning....

Sorry - I've trawled through some threads and I'm a bit confused... Just wondering if anyone can give me some advice...

My DD is six months and just hating all food! Baby rice, oatmeal, jars, purees, baby food cooked by me... Chocolate pudding (I was desperate!) and literally everything!! She gags and splutters and none of it goes down.

Some people have suggested BLW and I'm very happy to try it but if she can't eat purees without gagging won't she just choke on bigger pieces of food? What exactly and how much / often should I give her?

Thanks everyone!

Hi OP I puree fed ds1 and BLW ds2.
I had more issues with ds1 than 2. I read somewhere that the risk of gagging comes with putting food into their mouths rather than letting them do it themselves.
I would just offer a bit of whatever you are having when you have it.
She could eat anything. By the time ds2 was 7 months he was onto pork chops!

Aren't pasta spirals a little advanced for a 6m old? How about some very ripe avocado? TBH you could just wait a few weeks. There's no need to push it at this stage just could keep offering some food from time to time. Maybe start with a tiny bit of baby rice mixed with milk so it is just like slightly thicker milk and work from there. I hate the idea of a baby gagging so take it slowly if that's the case. I wasn't really into BLW as I like to make up my own rules as I go along and it seems a it rigid only giving finger food but I'm sure many people here will beg to differ.

BLW isn't just about finger food. I have a friend who successfully did BLW with her first. She would give her a spoon and let her loose. I'm not quite so brave with DD2, but I load her spoon up for her (this is with Ready Brek or yoghurt) and she has quickly learnt to grab it in the right place and get it in her mouth. She's just turned 6 mo. I've been giving age-appropriate finger foods since 5 mo. She just played at first but now is really starting to eat. And she loves eating.

ladyofla pasta spirals are perfect for BLW! You just put them on their high chair tray, and if they are ready for them, they will pick them up, put them in their mouth and munch away!

of a BLW tot eating spaghetti!

You'd be amazed at what they can eat!

SilveryMoon is exactly right about not putting the food in their mouths.

That is not to say I have anything against "traditional" puree weaning, of course! Smile
