Hi everyone, need some advice. I have an 8 month old and keep getting mastitis, my doctor said I should not be starting to discourage breastfeeding now. I feed morning and last thing at night and occassionaly in the middle of the day. We are progressing with weaning quite well but can't get her to take to a bottle. My doctor has now made me feel a little anxious that I am not doing the right thing. Any ideas? thanks x

2-3 times a day sounds quite little for an 8 month old - are you wanting to switch to bottles? Mine is 7.5 months and feeds morning, bedtime and 2-3 times in the day, plus a ff dreamfeed which I'm trying to drop.

your doctor is right, you shouldn't be discouraging breastfeeding, esp if you have mastitis! feeding often will help with that

why do you need her to take a bottle?>

2-3 doesn't sound like much at all, milk should still really be the main source of nutrition, with solids complementing it.

My DS is 8 months old and is feeding morning, bedtime, and 1 - 2 in the day, plus an 11pm ff and sometimes one other night feed, though tbh, this 'night' feed is often at 5am, so I class it as his morning feed!

This issue often confuses me too - DS eats like a horse with solids, and has dropped his 10.30am feed, so we're floating around the lower end of what others seem to be feeding. But he's bang on weight wise and I never refuse a bf request!

I guess all I can say is feed as much as you feel is right for you and your baby, but I agree that milk is the priority. I'm certainly in no rush to drop any more feeds.

My DD is just 9 months, and sounds like yours - feeds morning and before bed. I try to feed her in the middle of the day, but more often than not she keeps coming off and doesn't seem to take much. She never demands a feed any more, except very occasionally at night. I also worry she isn't getting enough milk but she eats like a horse and the weight is ok.

I've just started to replace the bedtime feed with a bottle after months and months of battling with the bottle. She finally seems to get the hang of it. I'm replacing this feed with bottle as she is taking forever with the evening breast feed and so DD1 is getting to bed later and later. And she keeps biting me....

My DC is 9 months and has a morning and afternoon feed and a bottle of formula at bed, so I'd say it sounds about right. Depends on how much yours eats as well I guess.

Ha i knew DD was taking me for a ride - little minx feeds 7am, 9.30am, 1.00pm, 3pm, 5pm and 7pm. And usually at least 1 night feed. but she is rubbish at solids. 8 months old soon.

pinkcamera · 07/04/2011 18:49

Zimm - my DD's still doing that at over 8m, plus 2/3 night feeds (minimum - sometimes more). We're doing BLW and getting her off the boob is proving slow work...

Zimm and pinkcamera my DD is feeding as much as your DDs. She is not wolfing down solids but is slowly getting better. We are using finger foods and spoon feeding/pre-loaded spoons depending on her mood. She is 8 months. We are making slow but steady progress.
