Hi all,

I started my hungry baby on baby rice yesterday, she polished the lot off and still drank her whole bottle!! We gave her the rice about 45mins before she was due her second feed so she'd be hungry but not starving, and this seemed to work well.

On to today....my baby has just gone down for a nap, normally she sleeps for half an hour, which would mean her waking up 30mins before her feed so would give her her baby rice then. However, occassionally she sleeps for about 1hour 30mins maybe even a bit longer. I don't wake her to eat as she gets grumpy without enough sleep and won't eat unless she wants it! So what do I do if that happens today? Do I give her baby rice as soon as she wakes up regardless of the time now?

Thanks

Hi there started on baby rice recently too!
I feel that if you are changing baby's eating habits, it's fair to expect some changes in his/her sleeping patterns.
Are you following a strict routine?

NoTeaForMe · 21/03/2011 09:37

No routine to speak of really! She feeds when hungry and sleeps when tired!! Her feeds do tend to be about 3hours apart, although at the moment she's not quite going that long as she's hungry, one of the reasons for weaning!

So do I give the baby rice when she wakes up? If she's a bit hungry is that going to go badly do you think?!

well you can try if you think it's right. But I am wondering whether it's a good idea to introduce too many feeds with baby rice (you sort of make it sounds like baby is having a fair amount of baby rice feeds, but I might have mis read you)
I am only saying that because the other day DS had three good feeds with baby rice and woke up in the night wailing (not his style) obviously in discomfort due to wind.
So I decided not to overdo the baby rice and give him a couple of baby rice feeds a day for now.

He is taking the br quite well now but there were times in the beginning where he could not be arsed with it.So then I gave up and and gave him a bottle instead but kept on offering br at certain times not certain that it would be a success.
sorry for waffling, I hope I am making some kind of sense!

I would give milk first and then baby rice a while later, just so she doesnt start to cut down her milk intake too soon. What age is she?

RitaMorgan · 21/03/2011 14:49

At the beginning you don't have to give food at the same time, or even every day. If she happens to be cheerful and awake an hour after a breastfeed, or when you are eating, give her something. If not, don't worry about it.

Thanks all!

I'm not sure I explained very well! She is only having one portion of baby rice a day, at her second feed of the day - roughly 10am. She has this and then has her milk and still drinks all her milk so isn't cutting that down at all. Also the rice is made with formula so. My concern really was that if she sleeps a little longer and wakes up too hungry I'm guessing it's not a good idea to give the rice then, so could I do it the next feed instead or just skip it for that day or what?!

Thanks

I used to give half the feed if they were starving, then food, then the rest of the feed.

RitaMorgan · 21/03/2011 17:52

Up to you, either skip it or give it later. If she's hungry give milk first - food is just about exploring tastes/textures.

Seona1973 · 21/03/2011 19:08

I would always give milk first and solids later as milk is most important

Thankyou for all your help!
