Dd hasn't been able to sleep much for days and keeps nervously sticking fingers in her mouth, trying to grab my arm and nose etc to munch them and has been very cranky.

Today i decided to hold a chilled carrot stick in front of her mouth to cool her gums - i didn't think she would be able or intersted to hold it herself. She liked it so much that she suddenly grabbed the carrot from me and stuck it in her mouth, triggering the gag reflex. After a few coughs she kept sucking the carrot, holding he carrot herself, and then suddenly nodded off and is napping happily next to me.

I am not expecting her to swallow anything for months but this was fun for both of us! To me she is still a tiny baby, can't believe what she just did!

Just wanted to share my first weaning story :-).

:) My DD did something similar a week ago with a stick off the end of a fennel bulb - she sits with us while we prepare food and I handed it to her and she happily sucked it for ages. So although she hasn't actually eaten anything, she has now officially tasted something other than bm!

She's 5mo later this week and tonight grabbed a handful of DS's curry, got it to her mouth but then decided she preferred the feel of it so decided to squidge it instead!

She's getting close to being ready for eating now I think - this past week she has started watching us like a hawk while eating (she's been sitting at the table for about 3 weeks now). I can't eat while bf now as she stops to watch me instead! So I think by next weekend we'll be putting bits in front of her so she has the opportunity to eat if she wants to.

It's fun all round - I'm just trying to remember to take it completely at DD's pace rather than forcing it.

We've had similar this week, DS is 20 weeks old. He has been shoving everything within reach into his mouth so I held a bit of pear in front of him just to see what he would do - he grabbed it and gnawed on it for ages!

He did the same with a bit of roast parsnip today, and got quite upset when it fell on the floor.

V messy but so much fun, can't wait to get stuck in properly. Smile
