What brand of baby rice do you use?

Just wondering, get overwhelmed by all the brands of everything in the supermarket. Am building up to weaning and though I'm going to try Pear and/or banana as first food, guess I should have some on standby specially for thickening purposes.

I just did fruit purees, no baby rice. It's not essential.

How old is your baby?

Twitchet · 15/10/2005 10:19

He's 18 weeks, so I am being premature here! Just want to get the store cupboard ready and maybe think about putting some stuff in the freezer as pears and apples are perfectly in season now. Don't plan to introduce solids until the WHo guidelines if possible. Though i've been letting him smell my breakfast banana for the last week or so and he really likes it!

I weaned on Baby Organix baby rice as it was the only one they had in the shop out here. I started weaning on this and breastmilk and ended up adding it to everything and found it very useful. I think they are all much of a muchness though so prob OK to get cheapest unless you want Organic. I will get Baby Organix again but only because it is what dd1 had.

baby rice is soooo expensive though! That's what put me off using it (as well as the number of people that said it tastes like wallpaper paste...)

There are loads of books on weaning if you're interested in reading about it. This one is quite good, if a bit hardcore (millet and linseed porridge, anyone?)

baby rice is great for thickening - my purees were always too runny

i liked boots own brand, plus i got advantage points!

but if i couldnt get to boots i would buy organix

(tbh they are all pretty much the same)

cow and gate pure baby rice, ds loved it straight away.

Baby rice is utterly unessential for weaning. Its only use is for thickening other gloops - I've used it that way even for adults. It gave both my children constipation when they had it as a stand-alone food ín the conventional way. We started with sweet potato as all you have to do is bung it in the oven, you don't even need to peel it first, and then you don't need to puree it either, just spoon it straight out of the peel. Its also very easy to digest, and sweet-tasting.

But FWIW, the easiest brand to mix, IME, is Hipp Organic as it comes in flakes and not as a powder. I found all the powder versions tricky to mix and always lumpy.
